Three nights of soul, blues, and funk in Piazza Matteotti to relive the legend of the Sugar Reef
Every summer, in the heart of the village of Capoliveri, in the province of Livorno on the Island of Elba, the picturesque Piazza Matteotti transforms into an open-air stage. This is where Sugar is Back comes to life, the music festival that offers three nights of live soul, blues, funk, and black music every June, with free admission.
The event was created to celebrate Sugar Reef, the historic and unforgettable club that for generations literally wrote the history of the nightlife, music, and social scene of the Island of Elba. For the many who experienced its seasons, Sugar is Back is a true leap back in time: a way to bring the atmosphere, rhythm, and emotion of a place etched into the island's collective memory back to the square.
The strength of the festival lies in its lineup, which brings international artists and bands to Capoliveri. It ranges from original blues to nineties funk, up to the great female voices of soul and black music. These are not just concerts, but collective experiences where, as the 2026 edition presentation states, "you can feel the rhythm under your skin."
Capoliveri is one of the most beloved villages on the Island of Elba, with its narrow alleys, panoramic terraces, and a lively tradition of summer events. Hosting Sugar is Back in the central Piazza Matteotti means combining quality music with the charm of a town that becomes one of the beating hearts of Elban nightlife in summer. An evening at the festival is also the perfect opportunity to discover the village, its venues, and the typical hospitality of the Tuscan islands.
With its free admission format and the setting of Piazza Matteotti, Sugar is Back confirms itself as one of the most anticipated events of the Elban June, capable of attracting a diverse audience and keeping the memory of an important piece of Capoliveri's and the entire Island of Elba's history alive.
The 2026 edition of Sugar is Back features three evenings dedicated to the great female voices of soul, blues, and funk, under the title "Donne in Soul, Blues, Dance, Funk & Black Music." All concerts are held in Piazza Matteotti, in Capoliveri, starting at 9:30 PM with free admission. The grand finale is entrusted to a world funk legend.

The Island of Elba can be reached by ferry from Piombino to Portoferraio, Rio Marina, or Cavo (frequent connections in summer). From Portoferraio, Capoliveri is about 18 km away by car. In high season, it is recommended to book the ferry in advance and consider parking at the edge of the village, as the historic center is largely pedestrianized.
Capoliveri is very popular in summer: it is best to book accommodation in advance and arrive at the square with some time to spare to enjoy the atmosphere before the concerts begin.
