The artisan vision: contemporary design in dialogue with the Etruscans at the MAAM in Grosseto
Design Function Art is one of the most original cultural projects in the Maremma region: an exhibition that brings high-end contemporary design into the halls of the Archaeological and Art Museum of Maremma (MAAM), in the heart of Grosseto, engaging in a dialogue with artifacts of the Etruscan civilization. Conceived and curated by local designer Alessandro Corina, the project is promoted by the Municipality of Grosseto with the co-organization of the Fondazione Grosseto Cultura.
The 2026 edition, titled The Artisan Vision, is dedicated to the essence of craftsmanship: that often invisible path that transforms a dream into a tangible reality, moving from idea to function and finally becoming art. It is the largest and most structured edition to date, and for the first time, it spans four months, from June 3 to September 30, throughout the entire Maremma summer.
The exhibition is divided into two main rooms. In the first, the Etruscan ceramics preserved at the MAAM are contrasted with contemporary design signed by international names such as Elena Salmistraro, Pepa Reverter, Matteo Cibic, and Jaime Hayon, in collaboration with Bosa Ceramiche. The second room features a stop-motion video by director Virgilio Villoresi, with sets created entirely by hand and inspired by the Etruscan world and traditional craftsmanship.
The exhibition is surrounded by a rich program of side activities: conferences with key figures from the worlds of art, archaeology, and local and national business, as well as workshops and educational camps designed for children and teenagers to discover the value of manual expertise from antiquity to contemporary design.
The heart of the Tuscan Maremma, Grosseto houses the Archaeological and Art Museum of Maremma in its historic center, enclosed by the Medici walls, on Piazza Baccarini. With this exhibition, the city in the Province of Grosseto confirms itself as a place where Etruscan heritage is not just a memory, but living matter that continues to inspire the creativity of the present.
The 2026 edition of Design Function Art is the largest and most structured ever: four months of exhibitions, meetings, and activities at the Archaeological and Art Museum of Maremma in Grosseto, on the theme of the artisan vision.
The path winds through two rooms: in the first, the dialogue between Etruscan ceramics and contemporary design; in the second, the stop-motion video by Virgilio Villoresi with handmade sets. Inauguration on Wednesday, June 3 at 6:00 PM at the Teatro degli Industri with a round table, followed by the ribbon-cutting at the museum.
