Contemporary European jazz on the sunny Renon plateau, amidst forests and Dolomite vistas
The Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige is the premier event dedicated to contemporary jazz in Trentino-Alto Adige and one of the most original in Europe. Founded in 1983, it spreads over fifty concerts across the entire region every summer, transforming cities, valleys, forests, and mountain peaks into one vast stage. Among its most beloved stops is the Renon plateau (Ritten), located in the Municipality of Renon, in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, reachable from Bolzano via the historic cable car and the Renon mountain railway.
On the Renon, the festival selects unconventional venues, staying true to its nomadic spirit. The matinée at the Parkhotel Holzner in Soprabolzano (Oberbozen) welcomes the audience within the Art Nouveau setting of this historic hotel overlooking the Dolomites, while the concert in the Wunderwald of Collalbo (Klobenstein) brings live music into the heart of the forest, offering an immersive listening experience in nature. This is the hallmark of the festival: the South Tyrolean landscape itself becomes a resonance chamber for the sound.
The Renon stage is part of the festival's Jazz & Hike tradition, designed for those who love mountain trekking and discovering new sounds. The Renon, famous for its earth pyramids, panoramic trails, and the Corno del Renon, provides the ideal backdrop for a weekend that weaves together signature jazz, plateau walks, and South Tyrolean hospitality.
Consistent with the artistic direction of the Südtirol Jazzfestival — led by Stefan Festini Cucco, Max von Pretz, and Roberto Tubaro — the Renon stage showcases young international ensembles and sound research projects, fostering a continuous dialogue between jazz tradition and contemporary improvisation. It is an opportunity for the audience to hear emerging voices of the European jazz scene up close in an intimate and evocative setting.
The Municipality of Renon, on the sunny plateau northeast of Bolzano, is one of the most appreciated summer destinations in South Tyrol. The Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige stage adds a touch of international culture to its offerings, confirming the festival as one of the most characteristic events of the South Tyrolean summer.
In 2026, the Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige stopped on the Renon plateau with two concerts, on July 4 and 5, included in the 44th edition of the festival (June 26 – July 5, 2026).
Saturday, July 4, at 11:00 AM, the Parkhotel Holzner in Soprabolzano (Oberbozen) hosted the matinée with the trio of German pianist Felix Hauptmann, accompanied by Roger Kintopf on double bass and Leif Berger on drums. Sunday, July 5, at 6:00 PM, the Wunderwald of Collalbo (Klobenstein) welcomed the Sheen Trio, with Shabnam Parvaresh on bass clarinet and effects, Ula Martyn-Ellis on guitar, and Philipp Buck on drums, for a concert immersed in the forest.
The Renon stage confirmed the festival's formula: young talents of the European jazz scene in evocative locations of the Municipality of Renon, in the Province of Bolzano, between mountain hospitality and alpine landscape.
Renon is connected to Bolzano by the Renon cable car (departing from Via Renon) to Soprabolzano, from where the narrow-gauge railway continues towards Collalbo. By car, it can be reached from Bolzano along the plateau road. Bolzano is served by the Brenner railway and the A22 motorway.
Concerts of the Südtirol Jazzfestival on the Renon are either free or have a modest entry fee depending on the event; for some performances and accommodation packages including excursions, booking is recommended. Updated programs, schedules, and tickets are available at suedtiroljazzfestival.com and the tourist portal ritten.com.
For the concert in the Wunderwald and for musical excursions, appropriate mountain clothing and footwear are recommended. The RittenCard allows free use of public transport, including the cable car and the Renon railway. It is advisable to book accommodation in advance during the summer.
