The largest contemporary art festival in South Tyrol
The Bolzano Art Weeks, known by the acronym BAW, are the most important event dedicated to contemporary art in South Tyrol. Every year, between late September and early October, the South Tyrolean capital becomes the stage for a festival that unfolds across the entire city: not a single venue, but a network of galleries, museums, studios, independent spaces, and public and private locations that open their doors to the public simultaneously.
The festival was born from the idea of making contemporary art accessible and pervasive, taking it out of traditional circuits and scattering it throughout urban daily life. Supported by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano (Italian and German Culture Departments), the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Bolzano, the Municipality of Bolzano, and the Tourism Board, BAW fully reflects the bilingual and plural nature of the territory.
The event is conceived and curated by Nina Stricker and organized by Cooperativa 19, in collaboration with the Südtiroler Künstlerbund (SKB) and Südtirol Kultur. Its hallmark is its collective dimension: BAW does not impose a top-down program, but gathers and connects the proposals of over one hundred partners, including public institutions, independent entities, private galleries, and individual artists.
The festival involves some of the city's most prestigious institutions, such as Museion, the Fondazione Antonio Dalle Nogare, ar/ge kunst, the Foto Forum, and the Teatro Comunale, alongside less conventional spaces: from the Bolzano Hospital to historic palaces in the city center, and from industrial sites to the banks of the Isarco river. This ever-changing geography invites the public to rediscover the city through the eyes of artists.
Each edition of BAW revolves around a theme that guides its reflection. While the 2025 edition proposed Remapping LAND/marks, an invitation to rethink the territory's landmarks, the 2026 edition focuses on ecological transformation with the title Regard(en)! Regreen! Regrow!, dedicated to the relationship between contemporary creativity and environmental responsibility.
With its inclusive and participatory formula, the festival has become a fixed appointment in the cultural autumn of Bolzano and the entire Trentino-Alto Adige region. BAW represents a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the vibrant South Tyrolean art scene and experience the capital in a new light, where contemporary art dialogues with everyday life.
The sixth edition of the Bolzano Art Weeks is scheduled in Bolzano from September 25 to October 4, 2026. The chosen title, Regard(en)! Regreen! Regrow!, proposes a reflection on the link between contemporary art, ecological transformation, and the regeneration of urban, social, and environmental spaces.
In preparation for the edition, the festival launched an international open call aimed at individual artists and collectives, invited to engage with urgent themes such as the climate crisis and the regeneration of places. Among the proposals received, several projects have been selected, each supported by a production budget and an exhibition or performance space provided by BAW.
As per tradition, the event will involve over one hundred partners, including galleries, museums, independent spaces, and public venues in Bolzano. The complete calendar of events, exhibitions, and performances will be published on the official website as the opening approaches.
Bolzano is well-connected: the train station is located in the city center on the Brenner line (direct connections with Verona, Trento, and Innsbruck). By car, it can be reached via the A22 Brenner motorway, taking the Bolzano Sud or Bolzano Nord exits. The nearest airport is Verona (Villafranca), approximately 150 km away.
Most events, exhibitions, and openings take place in galleries, museums, and spaces in the center of Bolzano, which are easily accessible on foot. The detailed program, map of venues, and opening hours are published on the official website bolzanoartweeks.com shortly before the event. Many appointments have free admission; some museum venues may require tickets or reservations.
The period between late September and early October coincides with the South Tyrolean autumn: we recommend combining your visit to the festival with a walk through the arcades and squares of the historic center.
