About Stuffed Rabbit Festival

Every summer, the Contrada Pallano in Villalfonsina, a small village in the province of Chieti, renews its appointment with the Stuffed Rabbit Festival. Born in 1997 from the initiative of a group of friends and volunteers, the festival celebrates the iconic dish of the local peasant tradition: stuffed rabbit prepared according to ancient recipes passed down through generations. The evening begins with Mass in Piazza San Pio and continues with food stalls, where the famous sfogliatelle villesi are a must, amidst music and conviviality.

A festival born from the Contrada Pallano community

The Stuffed Rabbit Festival is one of the most heartfelt gastronomic events in Villalfonsina, a small town in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo, nestled on the hills overlooking the lower Sinello valley. The event takes place in Contrada Pallano, a rural hamlet of the town, and was founded in 1997 by a group of friends and volunteers from the district, driven by the desire to promote the local area and rediscover the village's cultural and gastronomic roots.

Stuffed rabbit, the iconic dish of peasant tradition

The absolute star of the festival is the stuffed rabbit, a specialty of Abruzzese peasant cuisine prepared following ancient recipes handed down from generation to generation. The entire gastronomic evening revolves around this dish, enriched by other flavors of the local rural tradition. To end on a sweet note, there are the famous sfogliatelle villesi, the typical pastry of Villalfonsina loved by young and old alike, filled with Montepulciano grape jam, black cherries, cooked grape must, almonds, honey, and chocolate.

Between faith, tradition, and conviviality

The festival maintains a strong bond with the community and religious dimension of the village. The evening opens with the celebration of Holy Mass in Piazza San Pio, a symbolic place dear to the inhabitants of the district, before the stalls open and the square comes alive with people, music, and joy. The stuffed rabbit and sfogliatelle are served late in the evening, when the district transforms into a large open-air gathering place.

Villalfonsina, the village of the sfogliatella

Villalfonsina is known throughout the Vastese and Chieti areas primarily for its sfogliatella, a De.Co. branded pastry also celebrated in the historic Sfogliatella Evening organized by the Pro Loco. The Stuffed Rabbit Festival completes this gastronomic heritage, offering visitors the chance to discover another side of the town's traditional cuisine, in an authentic and genuine setting far from mass tourism circuits.
