Three days of Canavese tradition in the village of San Bernardo d'Ivrea
The Stuffed Onion Festival takes place every year at the end of May in the village of San Bernardo d'Ivrea, in the heart of the Canavese region, in the province of Turin. It is one of the most beloved food and wine festivals in the area, revolving around a traditional local dish: the stuffed onion, prepared according to the local recipe in both savory and sweet versions. The event is organized by the Pro Loco San Bernardo d'Ivrea, which has kept this traditional Canavese peasant recipe alive for many years.
The heart of the festival is the food pavilion, where you can taste traditional Piedmontese and Canavese dishes. Alongside the stuffed onion, the absolute star, you will find specialties such as Canavese-style giardiniera, tomini cheese with onion jam, Piedmontese mixed fry, agnolotti, meats, and, on some evenings, even fried frogs. Takeaway service is also available at specific times.
In addition to the food, the Stuffed Onion Festival offers musical evenings and DJ sets in the pavilion, which liven up the three days until late at night. There is also a sporting and community dimension, with tournaments such as the 4-on-4 basketball match and the traditional Sunday social lunch, which strengthen the bond of the San Bernardo community with its festival.
The festival is much more than just a gastronomic event: it is an opportunity to rediscover traditional Canavese recipes and experience the convivial atmosphere typical of Piedmontese village festivals. The stuffed onion, simple and humble in its origins, becomes here the symbol of a local identity carefully guarded by the Pro Loco and the inhabitants of the village. For those visiting Ivrea and its surroundings, it is the ideal opportunity to combine the discovery of the Canavese region with an authentic culinary experience.
