About Stefanese Carnival

Every February, the Stefanese Carnival brings the streets of Santo Stefano di Camastra, in the province of Messina, to life on the Tyrrhenian side of the Nebrodi mountains. Regarded as one of the most beautiful and anticipated carnivals in the region, it transforms Piazza Matrice and the historic center of the City of Ceramics into a stage filled with color, confetti, music, and masquerade groups. The heart of the tradition is the evocative 'Dead Carnival' Parade, a ritual that marks the end of the festivities on Shrove Tuesday, featuring weeping 'merry widows', nuns, cardinals, and traditional folk masks.

The Stefanese Carnival: Tradition and Celebration in the Nebrodi

Every year, in the days leading up to Lent, Santo Stefano di Camastra dresses up for the Stefanese Carnival, one of the most cherished events in the entire Nebrodi district. In this Messinese town, famous throughout Sicily as the City of Ceramics, the squares and alleys of the historic center fill with confetti, lights, colorful costumes, and joy, in a celebration that attracts families, young people, and visitors from neighboring towns alike.

The 'Dead Carnival' Parade

The most characteristic and defining moment of the festival is the 'Dead Carnival' Parade, a ritual that has always marked the conclusion of the festivities on Shrove Tuesday. A procession with a playful and theatrical flair winds through the streets, animated by the famous 'weeping merry widows', nuns, cardinals, and even the figure of the Pope, in a popular performance that blends irony, satire, and ancient local customs. It is a deeply rooted Stefanese tradition, guarded by the community from generation to generation.

Music, Masks, and Entertainment in Piazza Matrice

The beating heart of the festival is Piazza Matrice, which transforms into a large open-air dance floor during the Carnival evenings. Amidst dancing, DJ sets, entertainment, and musical guests, masquerade groups bring improvised choreographies to life, while confetti, lights, and smiles accompany both young and old. The event thus combines the traditional dimension of the procession with the more contemporary aspect of live entertainment.

Santo Stefano di Camastra, the City of Ceramics

Overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and nestled in the Nebrodi Park, Santo Stefano di Camastra is famous throughout Sicily for its ancient and thriving ceramic tradition, with workshops and studios that make it one of the island's capitals of artistic craftsmanship. The village, rebuilt after the 1682 earthquake with an urban layout inspired by Versailles, houses the Mother Church dedicated to the patron saint, Saint Nicholas of Bari, and the Palazzo Trabia Ceramics Museum. The Stefanese Carnival fits into this context as one of the most colorful appointments on the local calendar, alongside the Feast of Saint Nicholas and the Stefanese Oktoberfest.
