The patronal feast of Caronia in honor of Saint Blaise, featuring processions, blessed cuddure bread, and deep-rooted devotion in the Nebrodi mountains
Perched on the Nebrodi Mountains in the province of Messina, the village of Caronia preserves one of the most heartfelt devotions in Sicily: that of Saint Blaise, the town's patron saint and protector. His feast marks two moments of the year, gathering the entire community and devotees from neighboring towns around the statue of the Saint.
What makes Caronia unique is that Saint Blaise is celebrated twice a year. The liturgical anniversary falls on February 3rd, the day of the Saint's solemnity. However, the feast is also observed on the second Sunday of August: an ancient and affectionate tradition designed to allow the many Caronia natives who emigrated across Italy and the world to return home and venerate their patron saint in the heart of summer, when the village is filled with reunited families.
The day of February 3rd begins early with the marching band and majorettes parading through the streets to announce the festivities. This is followed by holy masses, culminating in a solemn mass presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Patti. In the afternoon, the solemn procession takes place: the Saint's float, adorned with flowers, bread, and torrone (nougat) offered by devotees, is carried through the historic center, accompanied by the band and the local population.
Saint Blaise is invoked as the protector of the throat. During the celebrations, the faithful receive the blessing of the throats with candles and a blessing with the Saint's reliquary arm. Deeply linked to the feast are the cuddure (known in the local dialect as "cudduri di San Brasi"), ring-shaped sweet breads made with hazelnuts, almonds, and honey, which are blessed and distributed to the sick and anyone who requests them, according to tradition.
Between religious rites, band music, town square performances, and—especially during the summer edition—fireworks, the Feast of Saint Blaise is much more than a patronal anniversary: it is the moment when Caronia recognizes itself as a community, the guardian of a tradition passed down from generation to generation in the heart of the province of Messina and the Sicilian Region.
For 2026, the community of Caronia renews its devotion to its patron saint, Saint Blaise, with the usual two events: the solemnity on February 3rd and the external feast on the second Sunday of August. The winter celebration has already been planned in detail by the Festival Committee and the Parish, while the summer one maintains its traditional structure of a procession, musical performances in the square, and fireworks.
Throughout the day, the cuddure (sweet breads) and the throats of the faithful are blessed with candles, according to the tradition that Saint Blaise is the protector of the throat.
The external feast is held on the second Sunday of August to allow emigrant residents to participate. It includes a procession of the Saint's statue carried on shoulders, accompanied by musical performances in the square and traditional fireworks. The detailed program for the summer edition is published by the Parish and the Municipality in the preceding weeks.
The celebrations take place in the historic center of Caronia (ME), in the Nebrodi area, between the mother church and the streets of the village traversed by the procession.
By car: A20 Messina–Palermo motorway, exit at Sant'Agata di Militello or Caronia, then follow local roads to the town center. By train: Caronia station on the Messina–Palermo Tyrrhenian line, located in the coastal hamlet, with connections to the hilltop village.
Two events per year: February 3rd (liturgical anniversary) and the second Sunday of August (summer feast for emigrants).
All celebrations and the procession are free and open to the public.
