The St. Joseph's bonfires lighting up the squares of Sammichele di Bari
Every year, around March 19th, the small town of Sammichele di Bari, located in the province of Bari in the heart of the Murgia, revives one of the oldest and most cherished traditions of Puglia: the Fanòve di San Giuseppe. This dialectal name refers to the grand bonfires lit in the town squares on the eve of the feast of the saint, who is the patriarch and patron of carpenters, fathers, and the humble.
This fire ritual has deep roots in propitiatory rites linked to the arrival of spring and the purification of the community. In Sammichele, this rural memory remains vibrant: the flames rising into the darkness are not merely a spectacle, but a moment of gathering and identity for the entire town.
The most authentic heart of the festival belongs to the children. Starting in the early afternoon, the little ones receive their Zippi—traditional branches—and set off on a door-to-door quest throughout the town's streets. They knock on doors, asking in the local dialect, «Cè n'ge mitte a San Gesèppe?» (What are you offering to St. Joseph?) and collect oranges, apples, taralli, zeppole, and small gifts, which are then tied to the branches of the Zippi. Everything collected is later symbolically offered to the bonfire during the evening, in a gesture that blends play, devotion, and generosity.
What makes Sammichele unique is that the bonfires are not lit in a single location, but across various squares and spaces in the town center, each managed by a local group or association: from the Pro Loco Dino Bianco to the Agesci scouts, and from the Public Assistance services to local businesses. In this way, the celebration spreads throughout the urban fabric, involving the entire citizenry, who are invited to participate freely from square to square.
The convivial aspect, an essential part of every Puglian folk festival, is always present around the flames. Food stalls offer local delicacies: hanging caciocavallo cheese roasted over the fire, local wine, and traditional sweets. The evening is accompanied by entertainment and folk music, transforming the eve of St. Joseph's Day into a true community celebration under the March sky.
Sammichele di Bari is a small village in the Bari hinterland, known for the Castello Caracciolo, the Museum of Rural Civilization, and its knife-cut sausage. Experiencing the Fanòve di San Giuseppe means discovering a genuine, non-touristy side of Puglia, where traditions are not mere reconstructions for visitors, but practices still deeply felt and passed down from generation to generation.
For 2026, the Fanòve di San Giuseppe in Sammichele di Bari were scheduled for Thursday, March 19, but due to adverse weather conditions, the event was postponed to Saturday, March 21. The traditional format was confirmed, with four bonfires lit in different parts of the town and, in the afternoon, the Zippi quest by the children. The citizenry was invited to participate freely in all the squares involved.
In the afternoon, children with their Zippi toured the town to collect fruit, biscuits, and sweets to offer to the bonfires. In the evening, the four fanòve were lit, each managed by a local group or association:
