The Acquaviva delle Fonti onion calzone festival returns for the third weekend of October
The National Calzone Festival is one of the longest-running and most beloved food and wine festivals in Puglia. It takes place in Acquaviva delle Fonti, a town in the province of Bari famous for its red onions, and every year it brings the historic center to life on the third weekend of October. Piazza Garibaldi, along with Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and the surrounding streets, transforms into a grand culinary trail filled with food stalls, market booths, and entertainment.
The heart of the festival is the onion calzone, a traditional dish of Acquaviva. The recipe features a filling made from the famous Acquaviva red onion, slowly stewed in olive oil and enriched with ricotta forte, eggs, and pecorino cheese, all encased in a golden pastry shell. Alongside the calzone, the stalls offer other local specialties such as spit-roasted lamb, baked goods, and Primitivo red wine, in a journey that celebrates the culinary excellence of the Bari Murgia region.
The event was established in 1971 by Cav. Giuseppe Cirielli, known as "Cicerone," a man deeply connected to his land who wanted to promote local products. Since 1995, the tradition has been carried on through the commitment of the Cirielli family and the Amici di Peppino Cicerone association, which organizes the event in collaboration with the Municipality of Acquaviva delle Fonti. Over the decades, the festival has become a staple of the Apulian autumn, blending gastronomy, folk culture, and entertainment.
Beyond the food, the Calzone Festival offers a rich entertainment program: live music, DJ sets, orchestras, and cover bands liven up the evenings in the square, while craft markets and exhibitions accompany visitors on their stroll. There is no shortage of attractions for children, street performers, and moments dedicated to local associations, making the event perfect for the whole family.
Thanks to its history and the quality of its food and wine offerings, the National Calzone Festival attracts thousands of people every year from Acquaviva delle Fonti, neighboring towns, and the entire province of Bari and Puglia. It represents a perfect opportunity to discover the authentic flavors of Murgia cuisine and experience the warm, convivial atmosphere of Apulian festivals.
The 55th edition of the National Calzone Festival is scheduled to take place in Acquaviva delle Fonti (BA) from Friday, October 16th to Sunday, October 18th, 2026. The event is organized by the Amici di Peppino Cicerone association in collaboration with the Municipal Administration.
This year again, the historic center and Piazza Garibaldi will come alive with food stalls dedicated to the famous onion calzone, craft markets, exhibitions, children's attractions, and street performers. Every evening, DJ sets, live music, and dancing are planned. The complete lineup of shows and guest artists for the 2026 edition will be announced by the organizers closer to the event.
The festival is held in the historic center of Acquaviva delle Fonti (BA), with its epicenter in Piazza Garibaldi and the surrounding squares and streets (Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, Piazza dei Martiri).
Every year on the third weekend of October. The 2026 edition is scheduled from October 16th to 18th.
