The Peasant Dinner is one of the most distinctive events of the summer in Sammichele di Bari, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, Apulia. This is no ordinary festival: it is a large-scale, participatory dining event where the guests themselves become the protagonists, setting up their own rustic-themed stations and sharing the authentic flavors of rural tradition.

In the gardens of Castello Caracciolo

The evening takes place in the evocative gardens of Castello Caracciolo, the 16th-century residence that houses the famous "Dino Bianco" Museum of Rural Life in the heart of the town. Founded in 1968, it is considered one of the oldest and most comprehensive ethnographic museums in Italy. Dining here means immersing oneself in the memory of a world built on agriculture, craftsmanship, and village life: the Peasant Dinner is, in a sense, the museum coming to life for a summer night.

How it works

Each group of participants prepares their own banquet, bringing everything needed from home to recreate the atmosphere of a traditional country dinner:

• checkered tablecloths, traditional cutlery, and tableware;
• baskets of typical Apulian products: cheeses, cured meats, homemade bread, fresh vegetables, and good wine;
• scenic and carefully curated decorations, reflecting the charm of rural simplicity;
• a vintage dress code, featuring shirts, jeans, suspenders, and plenty of smiles.

The event's philosophy is "zero plastic" and genuine conviviality: people eat, sing, and spend time together under the stars. At the end of the evening, a jury awards a prize to the most original and well-decorated station, adding a touch of healthy competition to the festive spirit.

A tribute to rural life

Organized by the "Dino Bianco" Pro Loco Association, the Peasant Dinner is part of the rich Estate Sammichelina program and represents an affectionate tribute to the territory's agricultural roots. In a village that has made rural memory its identity, this dinner becomes an opportunity to rediscover the values of the land, the shared table, and the community, passing them on to new generations.

The Peasant Dinner is traditionally held in the heart of summer, during the month of August.
