A day of nature, guided walks, and the flavors of the Nebrodi mountains in Castel di Lucio
The Spring Festival is an event that welcomes the new season in Castel di Lucio, a small village in the Nebrodi mountains in the province of Messina, in the heart of Sicily. The event weaves together the discovery of the local territory with the conviviality of the table, offering a day in the open air dedicated to the landscape, slow walking, and the authentic flavors of the Sicilian mountains.
The heart of the day is the guided nature trail, departing early in the morning. Accompanied along the paths surrounding the village, participants cross a hilly landscape suspended between the Nebrodi and Madonie massifs, with panoramic views of the countryside and the hill of SS. Salvatore. It is an opportunity to rediscover local nature, flora, and the history of a rural territory that remains authentic, far from the main tourist flows.
After the walk, the festival continues with a tasting of local products at the picnic area adjacent to the Labyrinth of Ariadne, in the Portella district. Among the featured specialties is tabisca cunzata, a traditional Nebrodi-style seasoned focaccia, accompanied by other local delicacies. This convivial moment thus becomes a journey into the taste and peasant culture of Castel di Lucio.
The setting for the event is one of the most evocative places in the municipality: the Labyrinth of Ariadne, a monumental Land Art work created by Italo Lanfredini for the Fiumara d'Arte park, commissioned by Antonio Presti. The installation, a large concrete spiral that follows the slope of the hill, is one of the artistic symbols of the Nebrodi and enriches the festival with a strong cultural appeal.
The Spring Festival represents a genuine way to experience the Nebrodi territory: an invitation to walk, learn, and taste the most authentic Sicily, that of the small villages in the Messina hinterland.
The 2026 Spring Festival in Castel di Lucio was held on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. In the morning, starting at 8:30 AM, the event offered a guided nature trail through the village paths and the Nebrodi hills.
In the afternoon, from 1:00 PM, the event moved to the picnic area adjacent to the Labyrinth of Ariadne, in the Portella district, where participants were able to enjoy tabisca cunzata and other local products in a convivial open-air setting.
Castel di Lucio is located in the Nebrodi hinterland, in the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached from the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (exits on the Tyrrhenian coast such as Sant'Agata di Militello or Tusa), continuing inland along the provincial roads. The Labyrinth of Ariadne and the picnic area are located in the Portella district, just outside the town center.
A one-day event held in spring/early summer. The 2026 edition took place on June 2nd: nature trail in the morning (departure at 8:30 AM) and tastings from 1:00 PM.
