Easter Monday celebrations at the Hermitage of Santa Caterina, featuring traditional sweets and ancient local rituals
The Sportella Festival takes place every year on Easter Monday at the Hermitage of Santa Caterina, in the municipality of Rio nell'Elba, in the province of Livorno, on the eastern side of Elba Island, Tuscany. It is one of the most heartfelt events for the local community, who for generations have chosen Easter Monday to gather outdoors around the hermitage, surrounded by Mediterranean scrub, to celebrate a pastry that has become a symbol of the town.
The sportella is Rio's most famous Easter treat: a fragrant, bow-shaped sweet bread decorated with colorful sugar sprinkles. Its shape hides an ancient meaning linked to fertility and courtship rituals. According to tradition, young men would give girls the cerimito, an elongated pastry, while the girls would reciprocate with a sportella, which represented the feminine form, often accompanied by a blessed egg. It was a silent language of love that culminated in this Easter Monday gathering at the hermitage, where couples could spend the holiday together.
The festivities are concentrated in the middle of the day and feature a simple yet highly popular program:
The venue for the festival is the ancient Hermitage of Santa Caterina, a small religious complex surrounded by greenery just outside the town of Rio nell'Elba. Next to the hermitage lies the Orto dei Semplici Elbano, a botanical garden that preserves the typical medicinal plants and flora of the Tuscan archipelago. It is often open to visitors during the festival, adding a naturalistic and cultural touch to the event.
Organized in collaboration with the Pro Loco, the municipal administration, and local volunteer associations, the Sportella Festival is a free-entry event that attracts residents and visitors from across the island. To facilitate the climb to the hermitage, a free shuttle service usually runs from the sports facilities in Rio nell'Elba. Amidst the scent of freshly baked sweets, games, and the backdrop of the Mediterranean scrub, the Easter Monday celebration remains an authentic opportunity to discover the most genuine traditions of Elba Island.
