Ten days of tradition, authentic flavors, and festivities in the heart of the Maremma
Settembre Roccastradino is the premier event of the Municipality of Roccastrada, in the Province of Grosseto, nestled in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma. For over fifty years, it has served as the traditional closing of the summer season, ushering the town into autumn by transforming the historic center into a vibrant open-air stage filled with communal dining, music, sports, and local heritage.
Organized by the Municipality of Roccastrada in collaboration with Pro Loco Roccastrada APS and numerous local associations, the festival is completely free to attend. It embodies the authentic spirit of Maremma village festivals: conviviality, hospitality, and a sense of community. The festival restaurant opens every evening, offering food stalls serving traditional local dishes, from Roccastrada-style strozzapreti with aglione sauce to fried treats and seasonal specialties.
The evenings are filled with concerts, dance nights in Piazza XXV Aprile, DJ sets, and performances that bring the Parco del Chiusone and the town's streets to life. There is no shortage of initiatives dedicated to sports and charity, including walking, horseback riding, and cycling tours, as well as tournaments and fundraising events that involve the entire community.
The most anticipated and iconic moment of the event is the Palio umoristico dei ciuchi, the famous donkey race held in the town center, where Roccastrada's districts—Torre, Borgo, Convento, Fonte, Capannacce, Centro, Chiusone, and Portoncino—compete for glory. Blending irony, color, and local rivalry, the Palio attracts large crowds every year and concludes in the evening with a spectacular fireworks display to mark the end of the festivities.
Perched on a hill overlooking the Maremma countryside, Roccastrada is an ancient village surrounded by forests, vineyards, and olive groves. Settembre Roccastradino is the perfect opportunity to discover this authentic corner of Tuscany, far from the beaten tourist path, and to experience firsthand the traditions of a community that has been preserving and renewing its festival for generations.
Settembre Roccastradino 2026 is scheduled from September 4th to 13th in Roccastrada (Grosseto), confirmed by the municipal administration as the closing event of the "Primavera a Roccastrada" summer series. As per tradition, the event offers themed gastronomic evenings featuring typical Maremma dishes, concerts and dance nights in Piazza XXV Aprile, sporting and charity events, family entertainment at Parco del Chiusone, and the grand finale with the Palio umoristico dei ciuchi between the town's districts, followed by a fireworks display.
The detailed day-by-day program, including times, artists, and evening menus, will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event on the official channels of the Municipality and Pro Loco Roccastrada.
