The Nebrodi wild asparagus festival in Santa Domenica Vittoria
In the heart of the Nebrodi mountains, on a slope facing the imposing silhouette of Mount Etna, the small town of Santa Domenica Vittoria in the province of Messina dedicates a day each spring to the sparacogna, the wild asparagus that grows spontaneously in the local hedgerows and scrubland. The Sparacogne Festival is a young but rapidly growing food and wine event, established in 2024 and organized by the municipal administration with the support of the Pro Loco, which combines tourism promotion, the enhancement of local excellence, and the rediscovery of rural traditions.
The sparacogna, also known as wild asparagus, is a herbaceous plant with tuberous roots and climbing stems, similar in appearance to cultivated asparagus. It belongs to the family of asparagus species found in Italy and grows wild in uncultivated countryside, both on the slopes of Mount Etna and in the Nebrodi mountains. Its slightly bitter flavor is its main characteristic, giving it a unique taste highly appreciated in local cuisine and making it the star of rustic dishes passed down through generations.
During the festival, the village transforms into an open-air stage. Along the streets and in Piazza Marconi, you will find food stalls showcasing the best typical products of the Nebrodi, along with local producers, show cooking sessions dedicated to sparacogne-based dishes, and tastings. Among the must-try specialties is fresh pasta with sparacogne and sausage, accompanied by a good glass of authentic wine.
More than just a simple food festival, the Sparacogne Festival serves as a model for tourism promotion that weaves together gastronomy, education, and local identity, even involving the village's school children in the rediscovery of rural traditions. For those visiting the Nebrodi in spring, it is an authentic opportunity to discover a wild local product and the hospitality of a small mountain community.
The third edition of the Sparacogne Festival was held on Sunday, April 26, 2026, confirming the formula that blends gastronomy, nature, and fun. Along the village streets and in Piazza Marconi, food stalls opened from 11:00 AM, offering typical Nebrodi products and sparacogne-based dishes, accompanied by show cooking and tastings. Among the side activities, bookable from 9:00 AM, were guided nature hikes, quad bike tours, paintball, and visits to the Mulino Passo dell'Olmo, as well as paragliding over the views between Etna and the Nebrodi and cabaret shows. The event, organized by the Municipality with the support of the Pro Loco, confirmed the festival as a model for promoting the region and local excellence.
