The summer gastronomic feast in the Nebrodi mountains, featuring grilled meat and Etna wines
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Castrato Festival is one of the most anticipated summer events in Santa Domenica Vittoria, a small mountain town in the Metropolitan City of Messina, nestled on the south-eastern slopes of the Nebrodi Park in Sicily. Every summer, the central Piazza Marconi transforms into a large open-air social space where locals, returning emigrants, and visitors gather to celebrate one of the most deeply rooted dishes of the local pastoral tradition.
At the heart of the festival is grilled castrato, a mutton dish with an intense flavor typical of the Nebrodi pastures. Cooked over charcoal and served with fresh bread at a symbolic price, it is the dish around which the entire evening revolves. The preparation, managed by local volunteers, keeps alive a gastronomic tradition that has its roots in the agro-pastoral vocation of this corner of the Nebrodi.
Accompanying the castrato are Etna wines, offered for tasting by the Enoteca Regionale Orientale: a pairing designed to enhance the bold flavors of the meat with the elegance of Sicilian volcanic reds and whites. The festival thus becomes an opportunity to discover and promote the oenological excellence of the island's eastern side.
Beyond the food and wine, the evening features live music and entertainment, in a festive atmosphere that recalls the authentic spirit of village fairs. The scent of charcoal, long tables under the stars, and the warmth of the community make the event a cherished occasion for all ages, perfect for those seeking a genuine experience far from the most crowded tourist destinations.
The festival is also the perfect excuse to get to know Santa Domenica Vittoria, a village included among the Truffle Cities and famous for its prized Nebrodi truffle, as well as for the pristine nature of the Park. Between mountains, pastures, and traditions, the Castrato Festival represents an authentic showcase of the gastronomic culture of the province of Messina.
The 2026 edition of the Castrato Festival in Santa Domenica Vittoria is expected during the summer, as is customary at the beginning of August in Piazza Marconi. As of today, the official dates and program have not yet been announced by the organizers. The event is expected to follow the established format: grilled castrato served with fresh bread and Etna wine tastings curated by the Enoteca Regionale Orientale, accompanied by music and entertainment. For updated information, please consult the official channels of the Municipality of Santa Domenica Vittoria.
Santa Domenica Vittoria can be reached by car from the A18 Messina-Catania motorway (Giardini Naxos exit) by driving up the Alcantara Valley, or from the Nebrodi hinterland. The event takes place in Piazza Marconi, in the town center.
Free admission. Grilled castrato with bread is offered at a symbolic price (5 euros in the 2025 edition); Etna wine tastings are provided by the Enoteca Regionale Orientale.
As it is a mountain area, a warmer layer for the evening is recommended. It is advisable to check dates and details on the official channels of the Municipality of Santa Domenica Vittoria.
