About Purple Cauliflower Festival

Every November, the small village of Moio Alcantara, nestled at the foot of Mount Etna in the province of Messina, celebrates its most iconic product: the purple cauliflower, known in the local dialect as "u cauli sciuri russu du Moiu". Between Piazza Municipio and Piano Mercato, the Purple Cauliflower Festival fills the village streets with scents, colors, and music, featuring tastings of traditional and creative dishes, live cooking demonstrations, craft markets, local wines, and roasted chestnuts. A festive day that weaves together gastronomy, rural tradition, and conviviality in the Alcantara Valley.

A festival dedicated to the purple cauliflower

The Purple Cauliflower Festival is the most anticipated autumn event in Moio Alcantara (also spelled Mojo Alcantara), a small town in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily. Situated at an altitude of 538 meters at the foot of Mount Mojo, the northernmost of Etna's adventitious cones, the village dedicates a day of celebration to its signature product: the purple cauliflower, which the community calls in dialect "u cauli sciuri russu du Moiu".

A vegetable with a unique color

The purple cauliflower of Moio Alcantara is a local variety with an intense reddish-purple pigmentation, caused by the sharp temperature fluctuations on the slopes of Etna and rich in anthocyanins, the natural antioxidants responsible for its color. Always a star of the local autumn cuisine, it is showcased during the festival in a thousand reinterpretations, from the most traditional peasant recipes to the creative dishes presented during live cooking shows.

The festival program

For an entire day, the town center, between Piazza Municipio and Piano Mercato, comes alive with food stalls, music, and entertainment. Typical features of the event include:

  • Tastings of dishes and specialties based on purple cauliflower, from traditional recipes to more creative variations;
  • Live cooking demonstrations;
  • Local craft markets and typical product stalls;
  • A dedicated menu featuring cauliflower, paired with local wines and the aroma of roasted chestnuts;
  • Music, entertainment, and activities for all ages, including car gatherings.

In the heart of the Alcantara Valley

The festival is also an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Alcantara Valley. Moio Alcantara is located just a short distance from the Alcantara River Park, famous for its lava gorges, and the Bosco di Malabotta Nature Reserve. The event, promoted by the Municipality of Moio Alcantara together with the Pro Loco, is a showcase of rural culture and the agricultural identity of this Etnean village, where peaches, olives, wines, and cheeses join the cauliflower in the basket of typical local products.

Purple Cauliflower Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Mojo Alcantara Purple Cauliflower Festival is expected, as per tradition, in the month of November. At the moment, the official dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers: the Municipality and the Pro Loco of Mojo Alcantara will publish the details soon. The usual ingredients of the festival are confirmed: purple cauliflower tastings, live cooking shows, markets, local wines, chestnuts, and music in the town center.

The Purple Cauliflower Festival of Moio Alcantara is expected to return in 2026, during the autumn month of November when the typical purple cauliflower of the Alcantara Valley is harvested. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: the organizers have stated that the program will be published soon. It is expected to take place in the town center, between Piazza Municipio and Piano Mercato, with tastings, live cooking shows, craft markets, and musical performances. This page will be updated as soon as the official date and program are released.
