The autumn festival dedicated to the purple cauliflower in the heart of the Alcantara Valley
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Purple Cauliflower Festival is the most anticipated autumn event in Moio Alcantara (also spelled Mojo Alcantara), a small town in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily. Situated at an altitude of 538 meters at the foot of Mount Mojo, the northernmost of Etna's adventitious cones, the village dedicates a day of celebration to its signature product: the purple cauliflower, which the community calls in dialect "u cauli sciuri russu du Moiu".
The purple cauliflower of Moio Alcantara is a local variety with an intense reddish-purple pigmentation, caused by the sharp temperature fluctuations on the slopes of Etna and rich in anthocyanins, the natural antioxidants responsible for its color. Always a star of the local autumn cuisine, it is showcased during the festival in a thousand reinterpretations, from the most traditional peasant recipes to the creative dishes presented during live cooking shows.
For an entire day, the town center, between Piazza Municipio and Piano Mercato, comes alive with food stalls, music, and entertainment. Typical features of the event include:
The festival is also an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Alcantara Valley. Moio Alcantara is located just a short distance from the Alcantara River Park, famous for its lava gorges, and the Bosco di Malabotta Nature Reserve. The event, promoted by the Municipality of Moio Alcantara together with the Pro Loco, is a showcase of rural culture and the agricultural identity of this Etnean village, where peaches, olives, wines, and cheeses join the cauliflower in the basket of typical local products.
The Purple Cauliflower Festival of Moio Alcantara is expected to return in 2026, during the autumn month of November when the typical purple cauliflower of the Alcantara Valley is harvested. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: the organizers have stated that the program will be published soon. It is expected to take place in the town center, between Piazza Municipio and Piano Mercato, with tastings, live cooking shows, craft markets, and musical performances. This page will be updated as soon as the official date and program are released.
Moio Alcantara is located in the Alcantara Valley, in the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached from the A18 Messina-Catania motorway (Giardini Naxos exit) by driving up the SS185 along the valley. The nearest train stations are those on the Ionian coast (Giardini Naxos-Taormina).
The festival usually takes place on a day in November, in the town center between Piazza Municipio and Piano Mercato.
Admission to the event is free; tastings and dishes are available for purchase at the stalls.
