About MangiaLonga Floresta

La MangiaLonga is a culinary walking tour that transforms the narrow streets of Floresta—Sicily's highest town, perched at 1,275 meters in the Nebrodi mountains near Messina—into a long, flavorful itinerary every summer. As you wander from stop to stop, you can sample authentic Nebrodi products, with the famous Provola dei Nebrodi taking center stage, all accompanied by music, local crafts, and crisp mountain air. The event has been officially recognized as a 'Sagra di Eccellenza' (Festival of Excellence) by the Italian Senate.

A gourmet stroll through the Nebrodi mountains

La MangiaLonga is the food and wine trail that brings Floresta to life every summer. As the highest town in Sicily, sitting at 1,275 meters above sea level in the heart of the Nebrodi Park in the province of Messina, it offers a simple yet irresistible concept: walk through the historic center's narrow alleys, moving from one station to the next, with a taste of local specialties waiting at every stop. No restaurant queues, no cover charges—the entire village becomes your dining table.

The flavors of the Nebrodi on your plate

Floresta is a land of pastures and pastoral traditions, and you can taste it at every stop. The undisputed queen is the Provola dei Nebrodi, a historic cheese whose ancient production techniques were born right here before spreading throughout the region. Alongside the provola, you will find cured meats from the Nebrodi black pig, porcini mushrooms, castrato (mutton), local cheeses like pecorino, ricotta, and maiorchino, and traditional peasant desserts. It is a journey into the authentic flavors of the Messina mountains, championed by those who raise and process these products every day.

More than just a food festival

The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Floresta in collaboration with the Municipality of Floresta. Along the route, in addition to tastings, visitors can explore exhibitions of embroidery and local crafts, roving displays, and musical performances that accompany guests from one stop to the next. The atmosphere is that of the most genuine village festivals, where food serves as a pretext to rediscover a village and its people.

A recognized event

After a hiatus, La MangiaLonga was revived by the local administration, supported by regional funding, and has seen a steady growth in participants. In March 2025, the event achieved a significant milestone: it was awarded the Sagra di Eccellenza (Festival of Excellence) mark at the Senate of the Republic in Rome, as part of the Quality Marks of the Italian Pro Loco Association. This achievement rewards the hard work of the Floresta community and confirms La MangiaLonga as one of the premier food and wine events in the Nebrodi region.

Why visit Floresta

Ascending to Floresta in the height of summer is an experience in itself: while the Sicilian coast swelters, here you can breathe the fresh air of the plateau and enjoy views that sweep across the Nebrodi mountains. La MangiaLonga adds flavor to this landscape, offering a day of slow walking, tasting, and conviviality in the highest village on the island.

MangiaLonga Floresta — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of La MangiaLonga in Floresta has not yet been officially announced. In previous years, the gourmet trail has taken place during the second week of August, in the heart of the Nebrodi summer season. Dates and the 2026 program will be communicated by the Pro Loco of Floresta and the Municipality.

At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition of La MangiaLonga in Floresta have not yet been announced. Historically, the event falls in August — the 2025 edition took place on Sunday, August 10th — starting from the center of the village with tastings of typical Nebrodi products along the route.

The detailed program (departure times, gastronomic stops, and side activities) will be published by the Pro Loco of Floresta in collaboration with the Municipality of Floresta in the weeks leading up to the event. We recommend following the official channels for confirmed dates.

Where

The trail winds through the historic center of Floresta (ME), starting from Piazza Umberto I. Floresta is located at an altitude of 1,275 meters in the Nebrodi Park, in the province of Messina.

How to get there

Traveling by car is the most convenient option: Floresta can be reached from the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (take the Sant'Agata di Militello or Brolo exit) by heading inland into the Nebrodi mountains, or via the SS116 from Randazzo on the Etna side. Comfortable walking shoes and a sweater are recommended: evenings at this altitude are cool even in August.
