Every summer, the Preturo district in the municipality of Montoro (Avellino province, Campania) experiences its most intense community moment with the Solemn Patronal Feast in honor of Maria SS. del Carmine. The liturgical feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which falls on July 16, is the focal point of several days where religious and popular traditions blend seamlessly: the community fills the streets, many emigrant families return for the occasion, and the village prepares with festive lights and stalls.
The celebration extends beyond July 16. In the preceding days, the parish hosts the novena, featuring the recitation of the Holy Rosary and sung litanies in the late afternoon, followed by Holy Mass and novena prayers. It is a time of preparation that involves confraternities, parish associations, and the faithful of all ages.
Alongside the religious program, the Feast Committee organizes an annual civil schedule that bridges generations. The brass band tradition of Southern Italy takes center stage with a grand brass band concert that performs a morning tour through the village streets and accompanies the procession, following a ritual that retains an intact charm in Campania and Puglia.
Subsequent evenings feature live musical performances, a local singing festival showcasing new local talent, children's entertainment, and open-air theatrical performances. The event concludes with a charity lottery drawing and fireworks that illuminate the valley late at night.
The sanctuary of Preturo's devotion is the parish church dedicated to Maria SS. del Carmine and San Felice. A small chapel dedicated to Saint Mary of Mount Carmel was documented as early as 1511; the community later decided to expand it starting in the early 17th century, financing the work with proceeds from a tax on ovens. Construction began around 1610-1620, and by 1625, the structure was completed by masters Iacobo Vernuccio and Luca Scoppa, with interior finishing continuing until 1630.
The church was consecrated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel in 1776 and became the parish church of Preturo in 1852, with the appointment of the first parish priest, Father Biagio Ricciardelli. Inside, there is a 1771 painting by local artist Giovanni Battista de Mari dedicated to the triumph of the Virgin; in the 1970s, frescoes by Alfonso Grasso and ceiling paintings by Lorenzo Iovino were added. The building was restored after the 1980 earthquake. The parish territory also includes the Cripta Sancti Michaelis, a rock-hewn church of Lombard origin and an ancient pilgrimage destination.
Montoro is a dispersed municipality in the province of Avellino, at the southern edge of Irpinia, in a fertile basin opening toward the Salerno area. Its fabric consists of numerous districts, each having preserved its own parish and festival calendar: Preturo is one of the most vibrant, also known for its historic Preturo Artichoke Festival. For visitors, the Carmine festivities are an excellent way to experience this inland Campania, less frequented by mass tourism but rich in living traditions.
The patronal feast of Preturo, a district of the municipality of Montoro (Avellino province, Campania), is traditionally celebrated around July 16, the day the Church remembers the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. For the 2026 edition, an official program detailing religious celebrations and the civil schedule has not yet been released online.
Based on local custom, the reference period remains the second half of July, preceded by the novena in the parish. The complete program โ mass times, procession time, evening shows, and fireworks โ is usually published a few weeks before the event by the Maria SS. del Carmine and San Felice Parish and promoted by Irpinian information channels.
We recommend checking the parish website and the Feast Committee pages to find out the exact dates as soon as they are announced.
