The Feast of the Assumption in Casteldarne

On August 15th, the day of the Assumption, the village of Casteldarne (Ehrenburg) in the municipality of Chienes/Kiens, located in the Puster Valley (Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige), marks its most solemn day of the year with the Festgottesdienst mit Prozession und Frühschoppen, a celebration dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption (Maria Himmelfahrt), the patron saint of the local parish church.

The Parish Church of Casteldarne

The celebration takes place in the parish church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, which stands on the hill above the Castle of Casteldarne (Schloss Ehrenburg), the ancient residence of the von Künigl lords. Documented since the 14th century and rebuilt in Baroque style between 1698 and 1701, the building houses an altarpiece of the Madonna of Mercy and an ancient statue of the Virgin, making it one of the most evocative places of worship in the area.

The Day's Program

The morning begins with Solemn Holy Mass at 8:30 AM, followed by a procession that winds through the streets of Casteldarne, accompanied by the local community and traditional groups. After the religious services, from approximately 11:00 AM, the Frühschoppen begins—a traditional convivial morning gathering enlivened by a concert featuring the JUKA (youth band) and the Chienes brass band (Musikkapelle Kiens).
