The Nativity comes to life in the alleys of the medieval village of Sipicciano, in Galluccio

Every December, the enchanting medieval village of Sipicciano, the highest hamlet in the municipality of Galluccio, in the province of Caserta, becomes the natural stage for one of the most evocative living nativities in the Alto Casertano area. Perched at an altitude of over 500 meters, among the ancient chestnut groves of the Roccamonfina-Foce Garigliano Regional Park, the old stone settlement overlooks the Garigliano plain and, on clear days, reaches as far as the Gulf of Gaeta. It is among these houses with wooden roofs, narrow alleys, and courtyards that the Nativity comes to life.
The Living Nativity is structured as a walking route that visitors explore on foot, venturing into the heart of the village. From scene to scene, costumed performers reconstruct the moments and atmosphere of the birth of Jesus, offering an experience that combines faith, theater, and collective memory. The urban landscape of Sipicciano, with its ancient stone and medieval vistas, needs no artificial scenery: it is the perfect frame for the representation itself.
As in the best tradition of living nativities, the event is also an opportunity to showcase ancient local crafts, many of which are now disappearing, restored to the community through the actions of the performers. Along the route, there are food and wine stands managed by the Sant'Anna Festival Committee, where visitors can taste typical local gastronomic products in a festive atmosphere of sharing that involves many young and old residents of the village.
The event has its roots in a centuries-old tradition: it was Saint Francis of Assisi who, in 1223 in Greccio, gave life to the first living representation of the Nativity. Eight hundred years later, that intuition continues to be renewed in dozens of Italian villages, and in Sipicciano, it finds one of its most authentic expressions, the result of weeks of work by the Galluccio community.
The Living Nativity is promoted by the Ri-Generazione Galluccio Association in collaboration with the San Bartolomeo Apostolo Parish and with the patronage of the Municipality of Galluccio. The event represents an important element in the enhancement of this corner of inland Campania, a territory of Auruncan and Roman origins that today guards landscapes, traditions, and flavors worth rediscovering. For the visitor, it is the ideal opportunity to get to know a village otherwise off the beaten path, amidst the magic of a winter afternoon.
The Sipicciano Living Nativity is a recurring event in the Christmas calendar of the Alto Casertano area. The 2026 edition has not yet been officially announced: the date will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Check the channels of the Ri-Generazione Galluccio Association and the San Bartolomeo Apostolo Parish for the date, times, and route details.
Sipicciano is the highest hamlet of Galluccio (CE), in the Alto Casertano area. By car, it can be reached from the San Vittore del Lazio (A1) or Cassino motorway exits, continuing along the provincial roads towards Galluccio; the village is a few kilometers from the municipal center. The nearest train station is Cassino, on the Rome-Naples line via Cassino.
The village is visited on foot along sloping stone alleys: comfortable footwear and clothing suitable for the hilly winter climate (about 500 m altitude) are recommended. Along the route, there are stands with typical local gastronomic products.
The event takes place during the Christmas period, generally in the second half of December. It is recommended to check the official date of the edition through the channels of the Ri-Generazione Galluccio Association and the San Bartolomeo Apostolo Parish.
