Every year, in the heart of the Christmas season, the small town of Francolise, in the province of Caserta, transforms into a grand open-air stage. The Francolise Living Nativity has become one of the most beloved traditions in the Terra di Lavoro region, attracting thousands of visitors from across Campania. The historic village and the medieval castle become the natural backdrop for reliving the Mystery of the Nativity, amidst ancient alleys, stone walls, and traditional crafts.
The nativity route takes visitors on a true journey through time. Over 200 actors animate numerous scenes reconstructing the key moments of Jesus' birth, along a path that ideally unfolds between Nazareth, Bethlehem, and Jerusalem. Visitors enter in small groups, accompanied by a guide who leads them along a short yet emotionally intense path, blending faith, history, and tradition.
What makes this re-enactment special is the setting: the ancient streets of the village and the walls of the Francolise castle offer an authentic backdrop that requires no artificial scenery. Walking among the stone houses and passing through the gates of the manor, one is completely immersed in the atmosphere of the Bethlehem of two thousand years ago. At the entrance and exit of the route, there are food stalls where you can taste typical local dishes.
The Living Nativity is organized by the Santa Maria a Castello Parish together with the Pro Loco Francolise, with the patronage of the Municipality of Francolise and the participation of students from the tourism department of the Ugo Foscolo Institute of Teano-Sparanise. It is a highly participatory event that involves the entire community: entire families and many local residents get involved to bring the scenes to life and keep a deep-rooted tradition alive.
Included in the rich calendar of living nativities in the province of Caserta and Campania, the Francolise Living Nativity takes place during the Christmas weeks, between mid and late December. For those seeking an authentic experience that combines spirituality, historical memory, and community warmth, it is one of the most recommended destinations for Christmas in the Terra di Lavoro.
For Christmas 2026, the Santa Maria a Castello Parish and the Pro Loco Francolise are expected to once again present the traditional Living Nativity in the village and medieval castle of Francolise, in the province of Caserta. At the moment, the exact dates, times, and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: the event is usually held in December, between the middle and the end of the month. Official information will be released on the social media channels of the Parish and the Pro Loco.
Francolise is located in the province of Caserta, in the hinterland of the upper Caserta area. By car, it can be reached via the A1 motorway (Capua or Cassino/San Vittore exits) and the Via Appia; the historic village and the castle are located in the upper part of the town. The reference railway station is Francolise, on the Rome-Naples line via Formia.
The event takes place in December, outdoors and in the evening: warm clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended for the route along the alleys and stairways of the village. For dates, times, and any booking procedures for the current edition, it is advisable to follow the social media channels of the Santa Maria a Castello Parish and the Pro Loco Francolise.
