A food and wine trail through the alleys of a Ciociaria village, in the province of Frosinone
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Magnalonga Pignatarese was born from a simple and winning idea: instead of concentrating the festival in a single square, it is spread out along the streets and alleys of the historic center of Pignataro Interamna. Visitors receive their itinerary and walk from one stop to the next, sampling a different course at each station. This is the magnalonga format, now popular throughout Italy, here adapted to the character of a village in Ciociaria, in the province of Frosinone, in the heart of southern Lazio.
Pignataro Interamna is located in the Liri Valley, a few kilometers from Cassino, on a territory that preserves traces of the ancient Roman city of Interamna Lirenas, from which the local Pro Loco takes its name. It is a town of a few thousand inhabitants, where the streets of the center naturally lend themselves to a roaming festival: small squares, open doorways, and courtyards that become open-air dining rooms for an evening. The event usually takes place on a Saturday evening, towards the end of August, starting after sunset and continuing until late at night.
The menu changes from year to year but remains anchored to the local cuisine of Ciociaria and the Cassino area: homemade pasta, slow-cooked sauces, legumes, seasonal vegetables, grilled meats, local cheeses, and homemade desserts, all accompanied by local wines. The stalls are managed by Pro Loco volunteers and local businesses, with a philosophy that favors home-style recipes over professional catering.
Launched in the early 2020s, the Magnalonga has quickly become one of the most anticipated events of the Pignataro summer. By the 2022 edition, local news reported crowded streets and food stalls literally besieged, with participation extending well beyond municipal boundaries. In 2025, it reached its fifth edition, a sign of an event now firmly established in the festival calendar of the province of Frosinone.
First-time visitors will find a typically village-like atmosphere: lights strung between houses, tables set up in small squares, volunteers serving at the counters, and groups moving slowly from one stop to the next. More than just a quick-bite festival, it is an evening of social interaction where food serves as a pretext to traverse the village and get to know it street by street. For those visiting lower Lazio in the summer, it is also an affordable and authentic way to experience local cuisine, far from the most beaten tourist paths.
Events like this are part of a widespread network of festivals and celebrations that, between July and September, bring the small towns of the Liri Valley and the Cassino area to life. Combining the Magnalonga with a visit to the Montecassino Abbey, the archaeological sites in the area, or the nearby villages is the most natural way to build a weekend in this part of Lazio, where distances are short and the landscape alternates between cultivated hills and mountains.
At the time of verification, there are no official communications regarding the date or program of the Magnalonga Pignatarese 2026. The Pro Loco Interamna Lirenas, which organizes the event, usually publishes information on its Facebook page a few weeks before the event, along with the opening of registrations for food and exhibition stalls.
Based on previous editions, it is reasonable to expect the same format: an evening food and wine trail through the streets of the historic center of Pignataro Interamna, in the province of Frosinone, with multiple tasting stops, artisan stalls, and musical entertainment. It is advisable to check the association's channels before planning your visit.
Pignataro Interamna can be reached by car from the A1 Rome-Naples motorway, taking the Cassino exit and continuing for about 10 kilometers on provincial roads. By train, the reference station is Cassino, on the Rome-Naples line via Cassino, connected to the town by local buses or taxis. The nearest airports are Rome Ciampino and Naples Capodichino, both about an hour and a half away by car.
During the event, the historic center is closed to traffic: it is best to leave your car in the parking areas along the access roads to the town and continue on foot. The route follows slightly sloping streets with some uneven surfaces: comfortable shoes are recommended.
Admission to the festival area is free; you pay at each individual stop according to the food stalls' price list. It is advisable to bring cash, as not all stalls accept electronic payments.
Pro Loco Interamna Lirenas, Pignataro Interamna (FR) — phone +39 389 2627993, e-mail [email protected]. Dates, updated programs, and participation details are published on the association's Facebook page in the weeks leading up to the event.
Accommodation options in the town are limited: the most convenient solutions can be found in Cassino and in the villages of the Liri Valley, with farmhouses and bed and breakfasts just a few minutes' drive away.
