A concert in a quarry turned into a natural theater in Bernezzo
Sinfonie di Pietra is a musical event born from an idea as simple as it is evocative: transforming a stone quarry into an open-air stage. The Cava del Cugino, part of the Unicalce plant in Bernezzo, sets aside its industrial function for one evening to become an open-air concert hall, where the rocky walls serve as a natural backdrop and soundboard for live music.
The initiative is promoted by the Municipality of Bernezzo, a small town in the Province of Cuneo at the foot of the Occitan valleys of Piedmont. It is a successful example of regional development, capable of combining landscape, local industrial identity, and high-level musical culture into an unforgettable experience.
The star of the evening is the B. Bruni String Orchestra of Cuneo, accompanied by the Phoebus Quartet. On the podium is maestro Alberto Mandarini, the creator of a musical project titled Love Song: a journey through the most famous love songs of 20th-century Italy.
The program features works by great authors such as Gino Paoli, Paolo Conte, Domenico Modugno, and Lucio Battisti, presented in original arrangements. The result is a refined crossover of languages, where the orchestra's strings engage in a dialogue with the jazz quartet, weaving classical sonority with improvisation and the color of Italian singer-songwriter music.
More than just a concert, Sinfonie di Pietra is an experience that plays on the contrast between the hardness of the quarry and the sweetness of the melody, between human labor on rock and the lightness of music. For the audience, it means experiencing music in a completely unusual context, far from traditional concert halls, in one of the most characteristic places in the Cuneo area.
The event is part of the rich season of summer festivals that bring life to the municipalities of the Province of Cuneo and Piedmont, where culture and territory often meet in places capable of surprising.
On Saturday, June 13, 2026, the Cava del Cugino in Bernezzo was once again transformed into an open-air stone theater to host Sinfonie di Pietra. On the natural stage carved between the rocky walls of the Unicalce plant, the B. Bruni String Orchestra of Cuneo and the Phoebus Quartet performed the Love Song concert, conceived and conducted by maestro Alberto Mandarini.
The audience was escorted to the concert area by a free shuttle service, departing from the entrance of the plant at Via Aldo Bruno 27.
