The traditional Carnival lunch in the square of this small Val di Non village
In the heart of the Val di Non, perched on the sunny Predaia plateau between Monte Roen and Corno di Tres, the municipality of Sfruz is one of the highest and most characteristic villages in the valley, located in the province of Trento and the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Every year on Carnival Sunday, this small alpine village with remote origins renews one of its most beloved traditions: the traditional Carnival lunch in the square, a fixed appointment on the calendar of local folk festivals.
The heart of the event is the large community lunch held at the village sports field, where long tables are set up outdoors. The Pro Loco Sfruz APS, which organizes the event, invites everyone to wear their masks and join the festivities: it is an opportunity for locals to reconnect, enjoy traditional dishes, and spend a day of joy together. The atmosphere is that of a genuine, simple mountain festival, where Carnival is not just a show, but a moment of community.
The celebration unfolds around the lunch, with children and adults in masks, music, and games enlivening the afternoon. The participation of families makes the event suitable for the little ones, who can parade in costume and have fun in a safe and welcoming environment. The Sfruz Carnival is part of the wider range of Carnival celebrations in the Val di Non, a valley that boasts numerous village festivals and ancient traditions linked to this time of year.
Visiting Sfruz during Carnival is also an opportunity to discover a charming village, known for the cultivation of the famous Val di Non potato, for its ancient goldsmithing art, and for the production of historic ceramic "olle" stoves. The village streets, with their stone portals and alpine-style rural houses, provide the backdrop for a festival that smells of tradition and mountain identity. The parish church, dedicated to Saint Agatha, and ancient Roman remnants tell a story spanning centuries, of which Carnival is one of the most vibrant popular expressions.
The event is generally held on Carnival Sunday, starting at lunchtime. For information on menus, reservations, and the detailed program, it is advisable to contact the Pro Loco Sfruz APS or the Municipality of Sfruz. As it is a community lunch, reservations are often required to ensure the best possible welcome.
