The chocolate festival in Monguelfo, in the heart of the Puster Valley
The Schokoladefestival in Welsberg, known in Italian as the Festival del Cioccolato, is one of the most delicious gastronomic events of the South Tyrolean summer. Every year, on the last weekend of August, the historic center of the municipality of Monguelfo-Tesido/Welsberg-Taisten, in the Puster Valley (Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige), dresses up for the occasion and becomes a meeting point for all chocolate lovers.
The Hauptplatz, the village's main square, fills with fragrant and colorful stalls: chocolate in all its forms—liquid and solid, dark and white, in pralines or bars, enriched with pepper, berries, or unique spices. The heart of the event is the «sweet, beautiful & handmade» craft market, which brings together fine chocolate specialties, handmade objects, and unique products to discover, admire, taste, and enjoy.
The Schokoladefestival is not just a feast for foodies: it is designed to entertain the entire family. Children can enjoy a rich program of activities, including creative stations, painting workshops, interactive games, face painting, and a large trampoline. Entertainment for the little ones, such as the «Elli's Kids» events, runs throughout both days of the festival.
The soundtrack of the event is provided by various musical groups alternating on stage: quieter, convivial moments during the day, and lively, engaging rhythms in the evening. Past musical guests have included bands such as Marc & Damian, Get Ready, RienzSound, and Combo7, alongside performances of traditional dances and Schuhplattler groups bringing South Tyrolean folklore to the square.
Alongside chocolate, the square also offers regional specialties and sweet delicacies, for a complete gastronomic experience that combines the culinary tradition of the Puster Valley with the art of chocolate making. It is no coincidence that South Tyrol boasts a true chocolate culture, with events like this celebrating every facet of it.
Admission to the festival is free and no reservation is required. Organized by the Initiative pro Monguelfo association, the Schokoladefestival is now a permanent fixture on the summer calendar of Monguelfo, easily accessible by train or bus and set in a stunning natural landscape, nestled between the mountains of the Puster Valley and just a stone's throw from the Plan de Corones area and the Dolomites.
The sixteenth edition of the Monguelfo/Welsberg Chocolate Festival takes place on Friday, August 21 (4:00 PM - 11:00 PM) and Saturday, August 22, 2026 (10:00 AM - 11:00 PM) on the Hauptplatz, the village's main square. The center becomes a meeting place for those who love chocolate, creative ideas, and a relaxed atmosphere.
The star of the show is the «sweet, beautiful & handmade» market, featuring pralines, bars, and chocolate specialties, as well as artisanal objects and unique products. For children, there will be face painting, a trampoline, and the «Elli's Kids» events with creative stations. Live music will accompany both days, with bands such as Marc & Damian, Get Ready, RienzSound, and Combo7, alongside traditional dances and Schuhplattler performances.
