Autumn flavors of Mount Etna in Ragalna, featuring sausage, caliceddi, and new wine
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Sausage, Caliceddi and Wine Festival takes place in Ragalna, a small town in the province of Catania nestled at an altitude of about 800 meters on the southwestern side of Mount Etna, within the Etna Park. It is one of the most beloved food and wine events of the Ragalna autumn: in Piazza Cisterna, a traditional peasant dish is celebrated, combining local sausage, caliceddi, and new wine.
The absolute stars are the caliceddi, wild greens that grow exclusively in the Etna region and are harvested in the fields during the autumn season. Sautéed and served as a side dish, they accompany the sausage in the festival's famous sandwich: a humble yet flavorful pairing, best enjoyed with a glass of local wine.
The event is rooted in the feast of Saint Martin, an 11th of November tradition linked to the new wine throughout Sicily. In Ragalna, sausage and caliceddi paired with new wine are a staple of this period, and the festival serves as a popular celebration of this heritage.
The festival is one of the highlights of the Autunno Ragalnese series, which brings the town's Sundays to life every year between late October and early December with the Etna Markets, dedicated to the excellence of the territory. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover the genuine flavors of the Etna mountains and the hospitality of an authentic Sicilian village at the foot of the volcano.
The Sausage, Caliceddi and Wine Festival is expected to return to Ragalna in the autumn of 2026, as it does every year on a Sunday in November, as part of the Autunno Ragalnese series. At the moment, the organizers have not yet published the official dates and program for the 2026 edition: the event's website announces that the program will be released soon. The structure remains the usual one, with the sausage and caliceddi sandwich, local wine, markets featuring typical Etna products, and music in Piazza Cisterna.
Ragalna can be reached by car from Catania (about 30 km) via the SP4 and the roads on the southwestern side of Mount Etna; the nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa. The festival takes place in Piazza Cisterna, in the town center.
Free admission to the event. The sausage and caliceddi sandwich accompanied by a glass of local wine costs approximately 5 euros. Market products can be purchased directly from the producers.
We recommend dressing for the cool autumn climate at altitude (Ragalna is at about 800 m). The event is held on Sundays, generally starting in the morning.
