About Etna Mushroom Festival

Every autumn, the Etnean village of Pedara, in the province of Catania, celebrates its most precious local products with the Etna Mushroom, Apple and Chestnut Festival. At the stalls in Parco Angelo D'Arrigo, you can find the scent of volcanic porcini mushrooms, Etna apples, and freshly roasted chestnuts, accompanied by Sicilian street food, show cooking, crafts, live music, and a funfair. A free-entry popular festival that attracts thousands of visitors to the slopes of Europe's highest volcano every year.

The Etnean autumn festival in Pedara

The Etna Mushroom, Apple and Chestnut Festival is one of the most anticipated autumn events in the town of Pedara, a small village nestled on the southern slopes of Mount Etna in the province of Catania, Sicily. As the first rains and the crisp air of the changing seasons transform the volcano's woodlands, the town turns into a grand showcase of Etnean flavors: the absolute stars are the Etna porcini mushrooms, local apples, and chestnuts from the volcanic groves.

The stars of the show: the volcano's porcini mushrooms

The mushroom is the true king of the festival. Thanks to the mineral-rich volcanic soil, the woods of Etna produce high-quality mushrooms, most notably the sought-after Boletus aereus, the black porcini with its firm texture and intense aroma. At the food stalls, mushrooms are served fresh, preserved in oil, grilled, or prepared according to traditional Etnean peasant recipes, offering a culinary journey that highlights the deep bond between the community and the mountain.

Apples, chestnuts, and local specialties

Alongside the mushrooms, you will find Etna applesโ€”sweet and crunchyโ€”and chestnuts roasted on the spot, a symbol of autumn conviviality. The festival is also the perfect opportunity to discover local products: honey, preserves, traditional sweets, cheeses, and Sicilian street food specialties, from grilled sausage to delicious snacks on the go.

Entertainment, crafts, and fun

The event, organized by Etna Eventi Management with the patronage of the Municipality of Pedara, is about more than just gastronomy. Along the paths of Parco Angelo D'Arrigo, you will find show cooking sessions dedicated to mushroom-based dishes, musical performances, entertainment, craft exhibitions, guided tours, and play areas for children. There is also a funfair, making the festival a perfect outing for the whole family.

A popular, free-entry event

Admission is free, and the event traditionally takes place during the weekend of Saint Martin in early November. The festival is a valuable opportunity to promote the local economy, small producers, and the folk traditions of the Etna region, in a festive atmosphere that brings together residents and visitors from across the province of Catania and eastern Sicily.
