About Sassi e non solo

Nestled in the heart of the Terragnolo Valley in the province of Trento, the Sassi e non solo festival celebrates the art of dry-stone walling and the culture of terraced landscapes every year. Between the hamlets of Sega and Geroli, the event hosts conferences, hands-on workshops, exhibitions, and an international competition that brings together master builders from around the globe. It is a celebration that blends environmental conservation, rural heritage, and ancestral knowledge in an authentic corner of Trentino.

A festival dedicated to terraced landscapes

The Sassi e non solo International Festival takes place annually in Terragnolo, a small municipality in the Vallarsa and Leno Valley in the province of Trento, within the Trentino-Alto Adige region. The event is entirely dedicated to terraced landscapes and the construction technique of dry-stone walls, which has been recognized as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO since 2018.

Created to promote the traditional terraces that shape the valley's slopes, the festival has grown over the years into an international event, serving as a key reference point for scholars, artisans, and enthusiasts of mountain landscapes.

Where it takes place

The heart of the event beats between the hamlets of Sega and Geroli, where the Giardini sul Leno, the Municipal Theatre, and the terraced slopes provide a stunning backdrop for the activities. It is here that each edition sees the creation of a new section of dry-stone wall, built by the hands of the participants.

The international competition

A distinctive element of the festival is the international dry-stone walling competition, which pits teams from different countries against one another. Recent editions have featured groups from Italy, Slovenia, the United States, and Canada, highlighting the global appeal of the event. At the end of the competition, the Sassi e non solo Prize is awarded.

More than just stone

The program goes beyond the competition: it includes scientific conferences on biodiversity and the future of terracing, workshops for all ages, botanical and local craft exhibitions, theatrical performances, cooking demonstrations featuring wild valley produce, and convivial moments centered around traditional gastronomy.

  • Conferences and round tables with experts and university professors
  • Hands-on dry-stone wall construction workshops
  • Activities for families and children
  • Exhibitions, performances, and traditional Trentino cuisine

A community project

Sassi e non solo is promoted by the Sassi e non solo APS association, in collaboration with the International Terraced Landscapes Alliance (ITLA Italia) and with the involvement of local associations and the Trentino School of Dry Stone. It is a collective project that turns the municipality of Terragnolo into an open-air laboratory for landscape preservation.

Sassi e non solo — edition 2026

The tenth edition of the Sassi e non solo festival celebrated a decade of commitment to terraced landscapes, with a program full of meetings, workshops, and educational activities dedicated to the value of traditional terraces. A milestone edition that combined landscape culture, environmental protection, and the promotion of traditions between the hamlets of Sega and Geroli, in Terragnolo.

The 2026 edition of the Sassi e non solo International Festival marked its tenth anniversary, spanning three days. On Saturday, June 6, at the Giardini sul Leno in Sega, the preparatory event "Waiting for the Festival" took place, featuring workshops for all ages, the "Petrabox and Most Beautiful Stone" competition, and entertainment by the Terragnolo Che Conta association.

On Saturday, June 13, at the Terragnolo Municipal Theatre, the conference "Biodiversity and the Future of Traditional Terraces" was held, featuring discussions on plant and animal biodiversity, the concept of the "living wall," and the screening of the documentary "Inter Lapides." The day concluded with the presentation of the Sassi e non solo 2026 International Prize and a talk by geographer Mauro Varotto (University of Padua) on future strategies for terraced landscapes.

On Sunday, June 14, in the hamlet of Geroli, the final day featured the participatory construction of a living dry-stone wall, the "From Wild to Domestic" cooking show, the theatrical performance "Patatrac," botanical and local craft exhibitions, and the official presentation of the wall at 6:00 PM.
