The historical walk retracing the path of the women of Terragnolo to Rovereto
The Camminata delle Teragnóle is much more than just a hike: it is a journey into the memory of a valley. The event retraces the ancient trail that once connected the Terragnolo valley to the city of Rovereto, in the heart of the Vallagarina, in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). Between the 19th and 20th centuries, the Teragnóle—the women of Terragnolo—would walk this path at dawn every day to reach city markets, sell their mountain-grown goods, and then hike back up to the valley to resume their work in the fields. A daily act of toil and resilience that this walk transforms into a shared memory.
The itinerary covers approximately 12 kilometers with an elevation gain of about 600 meters, requiring roughly 4-5 hours including stops. Starting from the center of Rovereto, the route climbs along the historical track until it reaches Terragnolo. Along the way, participants encounter over ten educational and re-enactment stations, featuring stories, testimonials, and small scenes of daily life that bring the ancient journey to life. Two refreshment stops are planned along the route, followed by a communal lunch upon arrival.
The event was established in 2009 through the efforts of local associations in Terragnolo and the surrounding area, with the goal of preserving and passing on this chapter of local history. After a hiatus during the pandemic years, it has resumed with renewed energy. It is not a fixed annual appointment: the walk returns whenever conditions and organization allow, involving over twenty associations, around 150 volunteers, and numerous local partners each time.
The walk is accompanied by Aspettando le Teragnóle (Waiting for the Teragnóle), a series of lead-up events that animate Rovereto and Terragnolo with workshops, tastings, storytelling, and installations dedicated to the valley's trades and the figure of women, both past and present. It is a way to prepare for the walk and experience the territory slowly, by observing and understanding.
The Camminata delle Teragnóle is organized by the Rovereto Vallagarina and Monte Baldo Tourism Board in collaboration with the Municipality of Rovereto and the local associations of Terragnolo.
The 2026 edition of the Camminata delle Teragnóle is currently in preparation. The Aspettando le Teragnóle festival is confirmed to accompany it, with three events scheduled between August and October: August 24th, I mestieri di una Valle (Trades of a Valley) in Terragnolo; September 20th, Da loro a noi… ma sempre donne (From them to us… but always women) at the S. Osvaldo Garden in Rovereto; and October 11th, Il paese che torna a vivere (The village coming back to life) in Ghesteri, Terragnolo.
The precise date and the full program for the walk (departure times, stops, lunch, and fees) will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event. The route will remain the historical 12 km path between Rovereto and Terragnolo, with approximately 600 meters of elevation gain.
Departure from the center of Rovereto (Vallagarina, Trentino) and arrival in Terragnolo. The route follows the historical Teragnóle path, approximately 12 km with 600 m of elevation gain.
Participation requires registration, with staggered departures in small groups early in the morning. A shuttle service is available for the return journey. Hiking shoes, layered clothing, and water are recommended.
