Discovering the hidden heritage of Pomarolo in Vallagarina with FAI

The FAI Autumn Days are one of the major national campaigns organized by the Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano (FAI), the non-profit foundation that has been protecting and promoting Italy's art, nature, and landscape since 1975. Every autumn, for an entire weekend, thousands of sites that are usually closed or little-known open their doors across Italy. In Pomarolo, a small town in the Vallagarina valley in the province of Trento, the event is curated by the FAI Trento Delegation together with the Rovereto and Vallagarina Group, in collaboration with the local municipality and parish.
The highlight of the openings in Pomarolo is the Parish Church of San Cristoforo, located on Via San Cristoforo. The building's origins date back to the 13th century; rebuilt in the 18th century and embellished with elegant stuccoes, the church was consecrated in 1827, while the monumental facade, featuring the large figure of Saint Christopher overlooking the Vallagarina valley, was completed in 1930.
Tours are led by FAI Volunteers and 'Apprendisti Ciceroni' (student guides), who accompany adults, families, seniors, and young people to discover the history, art, and curiosities of these local heritage sites. Entry is by voluntary donation: all proceeds support FAI's protection and restoration work throughout Italy.
The openings in Pomarolo are part of a rich program that spans numerous locations in Trentino-Alto Adige: from the Castle of Avio to the churches of Nago, from Bresimo to Moena, and up to Trento. The format combines the discovery of historical and artistic heritage with the pleasure of an autumn walk through the hills and vineyards of the Vallagarina, in a territory that weaves together art, nature, and tradition.
Pomarolo is located in the Vallagarina valley, just a few kilometers from Rovereto. By car: take the Rovereto Nord exit on the A22 Brenner motorway, then follow the SS12. By train: arrive at Rovereto station, then use local connections to reach Pomarolo.
Visits take place during the weekend of the FAI Autumn Days. In the 2025 edition, hours were Saturday 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM and Sunday 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM. Admission is by voluntary donation, with priority access for new FAI members.
