The great folk festival of Val Sarentino, featuring traditional costumes, parade floats, and Haflinger horses
The Sarner Kirchtag, known in Italian as the Sagra della Val Sarentino, is the most important and beloved folk festival in this secluded valley north of Bolzano, located in the municipality of Sarentino (Sarntal), in South Tyrol. According to ancient tradition, the locals celebrate the festival on the first Sunday of September, known as the "Guardian Angel Sunday." For this occasion, the entire valley gathers in the main village for three days of festivities that involve both residents and holiday guests.
The festival spans a long weekend, from Saturday to Monday, following a program established over generations:
The Sarner Kirchtag is famous for its traditional costumes, among the most distinctive in South Tyrol: men wear Loden trousers with embroidered suspenders (the Fatsch) and the typical black hat (Sarnar Huet), while women showcase black skirts, bodices, embroidered aprons, and the feminine hat with ribbons (Bänderhuet). The symbol of the valley is the Haflinger horse, the Avelignese breed with its bay coat and blonde mane; the best specimens are awarded on the Friday preceding the festival and proudly march in the Sunday parade.
Much more than a simple tourist attraction, the Sarner Kirchtag is a defining event where the Val Sarentino community renews its bond with its roots, faith, and rural culture. Stalls and food stands offer the valley's specialties, while the melodic Sarentino dialect fills the air, adding to the festive atmosphere of these days.
The 2026 Sarner Kirchtag will take place from September 5th to 7th in the center of Sarentino, adhering to the traditional first-weekend-of-September schedule. On Saturday, September 5th, the festival opens with a parade and brass band concert, followed by an evening torchlight procession, music, and dancing. Sunday, September 6th, is the main day: morning Holy Mass and procession to the chapel of San Cipriano, followed in the afternoon at 2:00 PM by the grand folk parade with floats, folk dance groups, mounted fanfares, and Haflinger horses. Monday, September 7th, concludes the festival with the traditional livestock and local produce market.
Sarentino is located about 20 km north of Bolzano, accessible by car via the SS508 Val Sarentino road. From the A22 motorway, take the Bolzano Sud or Bolzano Nord exit. During the festival, a dedicated bus service with special timetables is available (please consult the Tourist Association).
Participation in the parades, the procession, and the village events is free.
