The traditional religious processions of the village of Villanders in the Eisacktal Valley
In the municipality of Villanders, perched on the sunny eastern slopes of the Eisacktal Valley in the province of Bolzano (South Tyrol), religious processions have been an integral part of the village's spiritual and cultural life for centuries. This is not a single event, but a cycle of solemn celebrations that accompany the major feasts of the Catholic liturgical year, following the village's motto: "gelebter Glaube, gelebte Tradition", or lived faith and lived tradition.
The processions are held on the main religious holidays:
After the celebration of Holy Mass in the parish church of Saints Stephen and Lawrence, the village community marches in a solemn procession through the streets of the village, in a rite that unites generations and renews the village's identity every year.
Two traditional Villanders institutions contribute to the solemn and evocative atmosphere of the processions: the Musikkapelle Villanders, the local brass band, and the Schützenkompanie "Anton von Gasteiger", the Tyrolean rifle company that marches in its historical uniforms and flags adorned with the Tyrolean eagle. The Schützen are also responsible for the ancient custom of firing mortars (known in dialect as Böllern or Measchern): the shots accompany the Eucharistic blessing at the outdoor altars set up along the route, expressing the joy of the feast according to a custom rooted for generations.
The processions of Villanders represent one of the most vivid testimonies of the popular and religious culture of the Eisacktal Valley. For visitors, they are a precious opportunity to discover an authentic aspect of South Tyrolean tradition, far from tourist clichés, and to admire the small wine-growing village overlooking the valley, at the foot of the famous Villanders Alp plateau.
In 2026, the calendar of Villanders processions continues to follow the major religious holidays. Confirmed dates include the Assumption of Mary on August 15, 2026 and Rosary Sunday on October 4, 2026, in addition to the processions for Pentecost, Corpus Christi (celebrated on Saturday, departing from Castello Gravetsch), and the Sacred Heart.
Each procession leaves from the parish church after Holy Mass and winds through the village streets, with the participation of the Musikkapelle Villanders and the Schützenkompanie "Anton von Gasteiger", which accompanies the Eucharistic blessing at outdoor altars with traditional mortar fire. Participation is free and open to all.
Villanders can be reached from the Brenner motorway (A22), taking the Chiusa/Klausen exit and following the provincial road that climbs towards the village. By train, reach Chiusa station on the Brenner line, then take the 345 bus to Villanders.
The processions are free to attend, and no booking is required. Celebrations generally take place in the morning, starting from approximately 9:00 AM, departing from the parish church (for Corpus Christi, they depart from Castello Gravetsch on Saturday).
