About Sagra du Contadinu

Every summer, in early August, Giurdignano celebrates its rural heritage with the Sagra du Contadinu, a food and wine festival dedicated to the authentic flavors of Salento's peasant cuisine. Among the stalls in the town center, visitors can enjoy eggplant parmigiana, fried peppers, porchetta, grilled meats, and friselle, while the squares come alive with folk music and pizzica until late at night. A community event in the province of Lecce that combines great food, conviviality, and the vibrant sounds of Salento.

The Sagra du Contadinu in Giurdignano

The Sagra du Contadinu is one of the most cherished summer events in Giurdignano, a small town in lower Salento, in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Puglia. As the name in the Salento dialect suggests, the festival is a tribute to the peasant world and the region's rustic cuisine, characterized by garden-fresh produce, charcoal-grilled meats, and recipes passed down through generations.

The flavors of Salento's peasant cuisine

The heart of the event lies in the food stalls set up in the town center, where the Pro Loco and local volunteers prepare iconic traditional dishes. Every year, the star attractions include:

  • Eggplant parmigiana, rich and cheesy;
  • Fried peppers and peperonata;
  • Porchetta and mixed grills of charcoal-cooked meat;
  • Traditional horse meat pieces, a staple of Salento cuisine;
  • Peasant-style friselle, topped with tomatoes, olive oil, and oregano.

Everything is paired with local wine and traditional desserts, creating a convivial atmosphere that draws families, tourists, and visitors from neighboring towns every year.

Folk music and pizzica

The Sagra du Contadinu is not just about gastronomy: the evenings are brought to life by folk music and the infectious rhythms of pizzica, the traditional dance that symbolizes Salento's musical identity. Folk groups and musical ensembles take turns on the stage set up in the town center, turning the festival into a massive community gathering that continues late into the night.

Giurdignano, the megalithic garden of Italy

Another reason to visit the festival is the charm of the village itself. Giurdignano is known as the "megalithic garden of Italy" due to the extraordinary concentration of menhirs and dolmens scattered throughout the surrounding countryside—unique prehistoric landmarks in the Salento landscape. A walk among these stone monuments, before or after the festival, allows you to discover a lesser-known but fascinating side of Salento.

A community celebration

Organized by the Pro Loco of Giurdignano, the Sagra du Contadinu is a free-entry event that celebrates the town's rural roots and hospitality. It is the perfect opportunity to experience the most authentic side of Salento, far from the crowded beaches, amidst genuine flavors, music, and the warm welcome of a community that opens its streets to visitors in the heart of summer.

Sagra du Contadinu — edition 2026

The Sagra du Contadinu will return to Giurdignano in the summer of 2026 with its usual offering of Salento peasant cuisine and evenings of folk music and pizzica. Official dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the Pro Loco; the event is traditionally held in early August. We recommend following the social media channels of the Pro Loco of Giurdignano for updates.
