The May 1st rural festival in the heart of Capo di Leuca

In the municipality of Corsano, at the southern tip of the Province of Lecce and just a few kilometers from Santa Maria di Leuca, May 1st has always been the day of Santa Maura. This is not a choice linked to Labor Day: May 1st is the feast day of the Eastern saint to whom the Corsano community is deeply devoted. Around this anniversary, one of the most authentic events in Capo di Leuca has grown, capable of uniting religious ritual, a rural fair, and popular conviviality.
The heart of the festival is the Santa Maura Chapel, a small sanctuary nestled in the countryside just outside the town, on a hill from which the view reaches the sea. According to local tradition, devotion to the saint was brought by sailors who survived a shipwreck, which is why the chapel stands isolated, overlooking the sea as a sign of protection. The original structure, having deteriorated over time, was rebuilt by the community on the same spot. From the chapel begins the picturesque procession that accompanies the image of the saint to the town center, with the involvement of the Santa Sofia Parish; the religious moment traditionally closes with a fireworks display.
Alongside the feast is the Santa Maura Fair, established in 1979. Originally, it was a market dedicated almost exclusively to the trade of livestock and agricultural products; over time, it has transformed into a broader fair, with stalls of various goods and numerous stands of Salento gastronomy. Among the Corsano specialties that can be tasted are paparotta (stale bread sautéed in oil with vegetables and legumes), frise, and fave cotte corsanesi, a traditional legume purée of the farming culture.
In front of the small country church, the Pro Loco Corsano enlivens the day with games and competitions that tell the story of the festival's rural soul: from the contest to guess the weight of a piglet to the one estimating the height of a ham, as well as wine tastings and volleyball tournaments. It is a community festival, family-oriented and outdoors, which attracts believers and curious visitors from all the towns of Capo di Leuca. Organized by the Pro Loco together with the Municipality of Corsano, the Santa Sofia Parish, and local associations, the Santa Maura Feast and Fair remains one of the defining events of the Salento calendar in early May.
At the moment, no official program has been published for the 2026 edition of the Santa Maura Feast and Fair in Corsano. As this is an anniversary linked to the saint's feast day, the festival is traditionally expected around May 1st, with the procession from the Santa Maura Chapel to the town center and the fair featuring food stalls and typical Salento products. For confirmed dates and program, we recommend following the channels of the Pro Loco Corsano and the Municipality of Corsano.
The Santa Maura Feast and Fair is held in Corsano (Province of Lecce, Puglia), at the Santa Maura Chapel in the open countryside, along Via Cazzamendola, with the procession reaching the town center.
By car: Corsano can be reached from the SS275 road in the direction of Santa Maria di Leuca, at the end of Capo di Leuca. The reference railway stations are those of the Ferrovie del Sud Est in lower Salento; the nearest airport is Brindisi.
The festival traditionally falls on May 1st, the feast day of Santa Maura.
Participation in the festival and the fair is free and open to all.
