The patronal feast of Andrano in lower Salento
The Madonna delle Grazie Festival is the most heartfelt event of the year for Andrano, a small town in lower Salento in the province of Lecce, in the heart of southern Puglia. Every summer, in early August, the historic center is transformed: artistic illuminations create arches of light above the streets, devotees gather around the Mother Church, and the entire community, joined by many emigrants returning home for the occasion, comes together to honor their patron saint.
The devotion of Andrano to the Madonna delle Grazie has its roots in a miraculous event. On October 17, 1819, a violent storm damaged the parish church bell tower: a family was buried under the rubble but emerged unharmed, a fact the inhabitants attributed to the protection of the Virgin. The memory of this miracle is preserved in a letter held in the diocesan archives of Otranto. Popular tradition also links this story to the image of the Madonna, who is said to have defended the village during a Saracen raid, saving it from the fate that befell Otranto in 1480.
The centerpiece of the festival is the solemn procession: the statue of the Madonna is carried from the Mother Church to the church of Madonna dell'Attarico, accompanied by a brass band, confraternities, and a long line of the faithful. Celebrations include solemn masses, sacred music, and liturgical chants. At the end of the devotional rites, a small concert is held, and the pucciaโa traditional breadโis distributed, marking the transition from the religious dimension to the more convivial side of the festival.
After the sacred rites, the famous Sagra te la pitta cu le ulie comes to life, celebrating the Salento-style focaccia seasoned with olives, which serves as the gastronomic heart of the event. Stalls offer typical local dishes: pittule, horse meat stew, local cheeses, and traditional sweets. Live music, featuring bands and artists from Salento, keeps the evenings lively until late, while the final fireworks display illuminates the sky over Andrano.
More than just a patronal feast, the Madonna delle Grazie Festival is a collective ritual that strengthens the bond between the people of Andrano and their land. For visitors, it is the ideal opportunity to discover Salento's hospitality, genuine cuisine, and the religious and folk traditions of this corner of Puglia overlooking the Adriatic Sea, just a few kilometers from the picturesque marina of Castiglione d'Otranto.
The 2026 Madonna delle Grazie Festival in Andrano, in the province of Lecce, is expected for the beginning of August: the Salento events calendar indicates the start of the festivities on August 3, 2026, following the usual traditional timing at the start of the month.
This year again, the patronal feast will blend religious and secular dimensions: the procession of the Madonna's statue, liturgical celebrations, artistic illuminations in the historic center, live music concerts, fireworks, and the Sagra te la pitta cu le ulie with typical Salento dishes.
The full program with times and artists for the 2026 edition has not yet been officially published. It is recommended to follow the Municipality of Andrano channels for updates.
