About Madonna della Grotta

Every year in early July, Carpignano Salentino celebrates its patron saint, the Madonna della Grotta, with a two-day festival that combines religious devotion with popular joy. Solemn mass, a procession with the statue of the Virgin through the village streets, a town band, artistic light displays, folk music concerts, local Salento food stalls, and a grand fireworks finale bring this town in the province of Lecce to life. A tradition rooted in the legend of the 1568 apparition and the ancient sanctuary at the edge of the village.

The patronal feast of Carpignano Salentino

The Santa Maria della Grotta Festival is the main patronal feast of Carpignano Salentino, a village in lower Salento in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Puglia. Every year, at the beginning of July, the entire community gathers around its patron saint, the Madonna della Grotta, for two days that weave together religious and civil life: the first day is dedicated to sacred rites, the second to popular festivities with light displays, concerts, and fireworks.

The legend and the sanctuary

Devotion to the Madonna della Grotta dates back to the 16th century. Tradition tells that on July 2, 1568, a blind man, caught in a storm, found shelter in an abandoned cave at the edge of the village: there, while praying, the miraculous apparition of the Virgin occurred, who asked for a church to be built on that spot. In the same year, a painted image of the Madonna was found inside the cavity.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna della Grotta, built in the second half of the 16th century on the remains of an ancient Byzantine crypt dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, stands along the road leading toward Borgagne, just outside the town. Inside, it preserves valuable 16th-century frescoes depicting the lives of saints and paintings from the Neapolitan school, a testament to the artistic and spiritual value of the site.

The festival program

The celebrations open with a Solemn Holy Mass and the procession that carries the statue of the Madonna through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the town band and the participation of the faithful. A particularly poignant moment is the symbolic gesture with which the community ideally entrusts the keys of the town to the Virgin, a sign of devotion and protection.

  • Religious rites: solemn mass, procession with the patron saint's statue, and moments of prayer at the sanctuary;
  • Music: band concerts on the bandstand and evenings of Salento folk music;
  • Artistic illuminations that light up the squares and streets with traditional designs;
  • Food stalls with Salento specialties such as pittule, pezzetti di cavallo, friselle, and traditional sweets;
  • Fireworks display to conclude the festivities.

A staple of the Salento calendar

Like many patronal feasts in Salento, the one in Carpignano Salentino unites the sacred and the profane in one great community celebration, capable of drawing back many emigrants from Carpignano and visitors who, during the summer months, discover the villages of the Lecce hinterland. The festival represents a moment of collective identity and an opportunity to experience Apulian folk traditions up close.

The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: the anniversary is traditionally linked to the first days of July, in memory of the 1568 apparition.
