The bonfires of the longest night of the year in the heart of Salento
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of Salento, the town of Galatone (Province of Lecce, Puglia) dedicates one of its most heartfelt celebrations to Saint Lucy. Every year, on December 12th and 13th, the historic center and local districts come alive with devotion and folklore to honor the patron saint of eyesight, in a celebration that blends religious observance with community spirit.
The most evocative feature of the festival is the fanòi, the large bonfires lit on the night of December 12th in various districts of the town. Around the fire, on the longest night of the year, families and neighbors gather to keep warm, chat, and share traditional food: it is an ancient ritual of light and hope that symbolically kicks off the Christmas season. In the past, districts would compete to build the most impressive bonfire, with local youths gathering wood and brushwood from the countryside.
This tradition, which risked disappearing due to outdoor fire regulations, has been preserved for decades by local figures such as Luigi Gabrieli, known in town as "lu Zzù Giggi", who has lit his fanò in the San Luca-Fulcignano district since 1982. For several years now, the Fulcignano Neighborhood Committee has supported him in rediscovering the human, social, and communal value of this Salento custom.
Alongside the bonfires, the festival retains its devotional core: the solemn Holy Mass in the Mother Church and the procession with the statue of Saint Lucy through the streets of the town, accompanied by local brass bands playing religious and traditional marches. The historic center is adorned with artistic illuminations and hosts folk and brass band concerts, performances by folklore groups, and a grand fireworks display to close the event.
The festival is also a gastronomic occasion. Around the fanòi and at the stalls in the center, you can taste traditional Salento specialties:
It should be noted that the main patron saint of Galatone is the Most Holy Crucifix of Mercy, celebrated in the spring: the Saint Lucy festival, while not the primary patronal feast, remains one of the most beloved and identity-defining celebrations in the town's calendar, attracting visitors from all over Salento.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Lucy festival with the fanòi in Galatone does not yet have an official calendar. According to tradition, the event is held around December 12th and 13th, with the lighting of the fanòi in the districts on the night of the 12th, Holy Mass in the Mother Church, the procession with the statue of the Saint, and civil festivities including illuminations, brass band music, and Salento tastings.
The detailed program will be announced by the parish and neighborhood committees closer to the event. This page will be updated as soon as the 2026 dates and program are released.
