The Salento patronal feast featuring a stunning boat procession to the sea caves

In the heart of the Adriatic Salento, the town of Santa Cesarea Terme in the province of Lecce (Puglia) dedicates its annual patronal feast in mid-September to Saint Cesaria the Virgin, the saint who gave the village its name. It is one of the most iconic events on the coast between Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca, weaving together popular devotion, maritime traditions, and the unique scenery of the famous sulfurous caves.
The devotion is rooted in an ancient legend. It tells of Cesaria, a beautiful young Salento girl forced to flee her father's incestuous advances. Taking refuge along the cliffs at the entrance to a large cave, she was saved by a lightning bolt that struck her father, causing him to fall into the sea. According to local lore, the foul-smelling, sulfurous waters that still characterize the sea caves of Santa Cesarea were born from that wicked body. Tradition holds that the Saint lived out the rest of her days in that very cave, which remains the destination of the annual procession.
The most evocative moment of the festival is the sea procession: after the religious parade through the town, the statue of the Saint is taken onto a boat and accompanied along the coast by a flotilla of vessels for the blessing of the waters—a ritual that unites the faithful and the local fishermen. As evening falls, luminarie (traditional light displays) illuminate the historic center, while brass bands, concerts, and grand fireworks over the sea complete the festivities.
Alongside the religious program, organized by the Sacro Cuore di Gesù Parish with a triduum of preparation and a solemn mass, there is a rich calendar of secular events: band concerts in the square, live music, food stalls featuring the flavors of Salento, and a festive atmosphere that keeps the town alive late into the night. The Saint Cesaria Feast serves as a bridge between the spiritual and the communal in one of Puglia's most fascinating seaside and thermal destinations.
Santa Cesarea Terme has been known since antiquity for its thermal waters flowing from four sea caves—Fetida, Sulfurea, Gattulla, and Solfatara—renowned for their healing properties. Experiencing the patronal feast means discovering a village perched above the Adriatic, with its Art Nouveau and Moorish-style villas, rugged coastline, and the charm of millenary legends: an experience that transcends the event itself to reveal the most authentic soul of lower Salento.
The 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Saint Cesaria the Virgin is expected, as every year, around mid-September in Santa Cesarea Terme (province of Lecce, Puglia). At the time of writing, the official dates and the 2026 program have not yet been published. Following tradition, the preparatory triduum, the solemn procession of the statue through the town streets, and the characteristic sea procession towards the caves are expected, along with light displays, band concerts, musical evenings, and fireworks. The detailed program will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
Santa Cesarea Terme is located on the Adriatic coast of Salento, in the province of Lecce. By car: from Lecce, follow the state road towards Maglie and Otranto, then take the Adriatic coastal road. The nearest train station is in Lecce, which is connected by bus to the coastal towns. Nearest airport: Brindisi (approx. 90 km).
The festival traditionally takes place around September 11th and 12th, with a preparatory triduum in the preceding days.
To watch the sea procession, we recommend arriving early at the waterfront and the panoramic terraces above the caves. During high season, it is advisable to book accommodation in advance.
