About Saint Vitus Martyr and MediTerra

Every year, on the fourth Sunday of October, Carmiano celebrates Saint Vitus Martyr, the co-patron saint of this Salento town in the province of Lecce. Religious rites at the Mother Church and the parish of Sant'Antonio Abate are accompanied by MediTerra, a showcase of gastronomic, cultural, and tourist routes promoted by the Pro Loco Carmiano-Magliano: tastings of wine, olive oil, honey, and craft beer, brass band concerts, and the traditional Saint Vitus Fair bring days of celebration to life in the heart of Salento.

The festival of the co-patron saint in the heart of Salento

Every autumn, the municipality of Carmiano, a small town in the province of Lecce in Apulia, gathers around its co-patron saint, Saint Vitus Martyr. Popular devotion sets the festivities on the fourth Sunday of October and the following Monday, when the Salento community weaves together faith, tradition, and local heritage in an event that unites the parish, the municipality, and local associations.

Religious rites

The devotional heart of the festival takes place between the Mother Church of Carmiano and the parish church of Sant'Antonio Abate. The celebrations open with a three-day preparation period, marked by the Holy Rosary and evening Holy Mass, also enlivened by the local school children. The eve culminates in the solemn procession accompanying the statue of the Saint, while on the day of the festival, the blessing of the fair, accompanied by the traditional fireworks display, precedes the return procession to the Mother Church. The initiatives are coordinated by the parish priests together with the "Madonna Nostra e San Vito Martire" Association.

MediTerra: taste and culture of Salento

Alongside the religious rites, the MediTerra – Gastronomic, Cultural and Tourist Routes festival has become well-established, organized by the Pro Loco Carmiano-Magliano with the patronage of the Municipality of Carmiano, the Apulia Region, BCC Terra d'Otranto, GAL Terra d'Arneo, and Confagricoltura Lecce. The initiative was created to showcase the excellence of the territory: in the food and wine stands set up in Piazza Assunta and Via Roma, visitors can taste wines, extra virgin olive oil, honey, gin, and the craft beers of BirrAut, a social cooperative committed to the inclusion of people with autism and disabilities. A conference dedicated to tourism and opportunities for industry professionals opens the event, combining economic promotion with community identity.

The Saint Vitus Fair

A highlight of popular tradition is the Saint Vitus Fair, which closes the festivities by enlivening the streets of the center with stalls, local products, and handicrafts. The illuminations and brass band concerts complete the festive atmosphere, attracting visitors from neighboring Salento towns and making Carmiano, for a few days, a focal point of Salento devotion and conviviality.

An identity-defining event

The Saint Vitus Martyr Festival represents much more than a religious celebration for Carmiano: it is an opportunity to strengthen the community's identity, pass on traditions, and promote the local food and wine excellence to a wider audience, combining spirituality, culture, and local tourism.
