Holiday festivities in the Baroque heart of the Val di Noto

In Avola, an elegant Baroque center in the province of Syracuse famous for its hexagonal urban layout and Pizzuta almonds, the Christmas season becomes a collective event that involves the entire community. Christmas in Avola is not an event concentrated in a single location, but a widespread program that for nearly a month, from the Immaculate Conception to Epiphany, brings squares, churches, schools, and neighborhoods to life with illuminations, light installations, and dozens of free initiatives.
The hub of the celebrations is the central Piazza Umberto I, dominated by the large Christmas tree and light installations. This is where the Santa Claus house opens, a destination for little ones during the holiday afternoons, and where key events such as the arrival of the Befana on Epiphany take place. Other squares and historic buildings complete the route: the Christmas market and the ice rink enliven the city center, while the exhibition of artisanal nativity scenes is hosted in the halls of the Town Hall.
Among the most heartfelt moments is the exhibition of artisanal nativity scenes, featuring works created by local master craftsmen and local schools, and the living nativity scene of Avola Antica, set up in the ancient village nestled in the Cassibile Reserve, where actors in traditional costumes bring trades and scenes of the Nativity to life. The characteristic Christmas train guides residents and visitors to discover the nativity scenes displayed in shop windows, parishes, and neighborhoods throughout the city.
The program, promoted by the Municipality of Avola, thus intertwines the religious and popular dimensions of the Sicilian Christmas with entertainment for families and tourists, offering those visiting south-eastern Sicily and the Val di Noto an opportunity to discover a city often less celebrated than nearby Noto but rich in charm and warmth.
The official program for Christmas in Avola 2026 has not yet been published. Pending the final calendar, it is reasonable to expect a program in line with previous editions, spread across Piazza Umberto I, the historic center, and Avola Antica, with lights, a market, an ice rink, an exhibition of artisanal nativity scenes, a living nativity, and musical events. This page will be updated with dates and events as soon as they are announced by the Municipality of Avola.
Avola is located along the south-eastern coast of Sicily, in the province of Syracuse. By car, it can be reached via the Syracuse-Gela motorway/expressway (Avola exit). By train, it is served by the Avola station on the Syracuse-Ragusa line. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about an hour's drive away.
The main events are concentrated in Piazza Umberto I and the historic center; the living nativity scene is held in Avola Antica, in the hilly hinterland.
Most of the initiatives in the Christmas program are free of charge.
