The Saint Lucy Festival is the heart of popular devotion in Syracuse, located in the province of the same name in south-eastern Sicily. Dedicated to the Syracusan martyr and protector of eyesight, this December patronal feast attracts thousands of faithful and visitors every year, filling the streets of the historic center and the island of Ortigia. It is more than just a religious anniversary: it is the moment when the entire city identifies with its saint, with an intensity that few other events in the Sicilian calendar can match.
The absolute star is the silver reliquary statue, crafted in 1599 by silversmith Pietro Rizzo. The life-sized statue is carried in procession by about sixty devotees, the famous portatori (bearers) recognizable by their green caps, while the saint's relics are paraded accompanied by women wearing green scarves. As early as 1625, the traveler Pietro Della Valle described the procession with the silver image of the saint, a sign of a tradition rooted for centuries.
Syracuse honors Saint Lucy twice a year. The December patronal feast celebrates the saint's martyrdom, with the main day on December 13th and the octave procession on December 20th. In spring, on the first Sunday of May, the so-called Saint Lucy of the Quails festival is held. The December feast remains the most solemn and widely attended.
On December 13th, following the solemn Eucharistic celebration in the Cathedral, the simulacrum leaves the Cathedral of Ortigia in the afternoon and crosses the city to the Basilica of Santa Lucia al Sepolcro, built on the site of her martyrdom. Along the route, at the Umbertino Bridge, the people of Syracuse greet their patron saint with traditional fireworks. The statue remains on display in the sanctuary for the octave, until the return procession on December 20th, which leads it back to the Cathedral.
The Saint Lucy Festival is a journey into the most authentic soul of Syracuse and Sicily: a collective ritual where religious piety, history, and a sense of community merge into one of the most moving experiences in Southern Italy.
The 2026 Saint Lucy Festival in Syracuse will renew the city's grand patronal tradition. At the moment, the Archdiocese and the Deputation of the Chapel have not yet published the dates and detailed program for the edition.
Based on previous years, the festival revolves around December 13th with the Eucharistic celebration in the Cathedral and the afternoon procession of the simulacrum to the Basilica of Santa Lucia al Sepolcro, continuing with the octave until the return procession. The official program, including times and route, will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks preceding the festival.
Syracuse can be reached by car via the A18/RA15 motorway (Syracuse exit) and by train to the city station. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about an hour away. The celebrations take place in the historic center and on the island of Ortigia, which is largely pedestrianized.
The main events are concentrated in Piazza Duomo and along the route to the Basilica of Santa Lucia al Sepolcro. The highlight is December 13th, with the afternoon procession.
During the procession, the city center streets are very crowded: it is advisable to arrive early and walk. Do not miss the 'cuccìa', the festival's typical dessert. For the updated program, check the website of the Municipality of Syracuse and the Archdiocese.
