The great traditional Syracuse fair for the commemoration of the deceased
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Fiera dei Morti is one of the most deeply rooted events in the popular tradition of Syracuse, in Sicily. It takes place every year in conjunction with the commemoration of the deceased, between late October and early November, a period when the city experiences one of the most significant moments in its cultural calendar. The fair is rooted in the ancient Sicilian custom of linking the memory of departed loved ones with gift-giving, especially for children: according to tradition, on the night between November 1st and 2nd, the deceased bring gifts and sweets to children, and it is precisely around this ritual that the city's great fair was born over time.
Set up in the Foro Siracusano area and among the Villini di Corso Umberto I, in the so-called Umbertina zone, the fair hosts over 200 exhibitors from Syracuse, other Sicilian provinces, and even Calabria and Puglia. Along the avenues, you will find rows of:
The Fiera dei Morti is more than just a market: the calendar features dozens of events every year, including concerts, comedy shows, cabaret, children's entertainment, and activities for the whole family. The evenings come alive with live music, tribute bands, and artists from the Sicilian scene, making the event a meeting point for all ages during the commemoration days.
The fair is organized by the Municipality of Syracuse through the Productive Activities Sector (SUAP) and is free to enter. Due to its location in the city center, the event is accompanied each year by a dedicated traffic plan, parking facilities, and a shuttle service connecting external parking areas to the heart of the fair, facilitating the influx of thousands of visitors. For generations, the Fiera dei Morti has represented an identity-defining appointment for the community of Syracuse and the entire province, keeping alive the customs linked to the commemoration of the deceased.
