About Cavagrande Living Nativity

Nestled within the stone walls of Avola Antica, overlooking the natural pools of the Cavagrande del Cassibile Reserve, one of Sicily's most evocative living nativity scenes comes to life. With over eighty ancient Sicilian trades, dozens of actors in period costumes, live animals, and tastings of local delicacies, the Monzello di Pietre district is transformed into a Christmas village from a bygone era. A must-see holiday event in the Avola area, in the province of Syracuse.

A living nativity between nature and tradition

The Cavagrande del Cassibile Living Nativity is one of the most beloved Christmas events in the Avola area, in the province of Syracuse. It takes place in Avola Antica, in the Monzello di Pietre district, set in a natural landscape of rare beauty: the panoramic terrace overlooking the famous Cavagrande del Cassibile natural pools, within the nature reserve of the same name. Here, among dry-stone walls, caves, and stone and wood dwellings, Christmas is brought back to life through the strength of Sicilian farming and artisan traditions.

Over eighty ancient trades

The nativity route is a journey through time: more than eighty ancient Sicilian trades are portrayed by dozens of actors in period costumes inside workshops and homes carefully reconstructed for the occasion. Visitors will encounter carpenters, cobblers, blacksmiths, washerwomen, and artisans busy preparing fresh ricotta, cheese, and warm bread. It is a re-enactment of a rural world that is deeply rooted in the identity of Avola and the entire south-eastern Sicily.

Live animals and tastings

Adding to the atmosphere are the live animals, including the charming donkey Pasquale, who has become a small social media celebrity. Along the way, visitors can stop for tastings of local products prepared on-site: ricotta, warm bread, local wine, chestnuts, honey, legumes, olives, almonds, and hazelnuts. It is an experience that engages all the senses, making the nativity scene perfect for families.

A community event

The event is organized by the Cava Grande Cultural Tourism Association with the support of numerous local volunteers, and is dedicated to the memory of Gina Dell'Albani. More than just a show, the Cavagrande Living Nativity is a participatory festival that unites the Avola community around its roots, in one of the most suggestive natural spots in the province of Syracuse. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers.
