The charity Advent market in the cloister of the Capuchin Convent in Syracuse
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Capuchin Friars Christmas Market is one of the most cherished events of the holiday season in Syracuse, in the heart of south-eastern Sicily. It takes place in the scenic cloister of the Convent of the Friars Minor Capuchin, located in Piazza Cappuccini. This complex, founded in the 16th century, overlooks the historic Latomie dei Cappuccini, ancient Greek stone quarries now transformed into a garden. The secluded, quiet setting of the cloister gives the event an intimate atmosphere, far from the hustle and bustle of larger city markets.
The market offers visitors numerous authentic gift ideas: plants and floral arrangements, Christmas ornaments, Sicilian ceramics, ethnic crafts, preserves, honey, liqueurs, and homemade sweets. Every purchase has a value that goes beyond the object itself, as it supports the parish's charitable works. The initiative is promoted by the S. Maria della Misericordia e dei Pericoli Parish, managed by the Capuchin Friars under the guidance of Friar Emiliano Strino.
Since its very first editions, the market has had a clear charitable mission: proceeds are donated to the community's charitable activities and, in some years, to missionary projects such as those of the "Cento mamme per cento bambini" association, which is committed to building homes for families in need. Shopping at the market means taking a concrete step toward charity, in the Franciscan spirit of hospitality and sharing.
Alongside the stalls, the program has often been enriched by convivial moments and tastings of traditional Sicilian gastronomy, such as "Pane e Panelle" and the "Chickpea Festival of Modica," as well as the blessing of nativity scene figurines with catechism children. It is an opportunity to experience Christmas in Syracuse in an authentic way, amidst faith, tradition, and solidarity, within one of the city's most beloved spiritual sites, which also houses the historic Innocenziana Library of the Capuchins.
The 2026 edition of the Capuchin Friars Christmas Market does not yet have an official schedule. As every year, the market is expected to take place in the cloister of the Capuchin Convent in Syracuse during the Advent period, with stalls offering gift ideas, decorations, ceramics, preserves, and sweets, with proceeds supporting the charitable works of the S. Maria della Misericordia e dei Pericoli Parish. It is recommended to check dates and times on the parish's official channels as the holiday season approaches.
