The patronal feast of Frassilongo in the Mòcheni Valley
The Sant'Udalrico Festival is the patronal feast of Frassilongo, a tiny village perched on the left side of the Mòcheni Valley (Bersntol), in the Province of Trento, in the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige. Every year, around July 4th—the day the calendar commemorates Saint Udalrico (Ulrich of Augsburg)—the community gathers to honor its patron saint with a day that weaves together devotion, conviviality, and music.
The saint gives his name to the village's parish church, the Church of Sant'Udalrico, a neo-Gothic building constructed between 1904 and 1908 and consecrated in 1911, which replaced a pre-existing chapel dating back to the 16th century. The church, elevated to a parish in 1943, houses frescoes from the 1930s and serves as the spiritual hub around which the festival revolves: the Holy Mass in honor of the patron remains the most solemn moment of the entire day.
The festival is organized by the Frassilongo Pro Loco in collaboration with the volunteer firefighters corps, and it takes place at the village fire station, which becomes the center of community life for the occasion. The program is designed for all ages: it begins in the late afternoon, continues with the religious service, and concludes late at night with dancing and live music.
There is also a food and drink service, featuring simple and genuine specialties such as hot sandwiches and French fries, which accompany the festivities until late in the evening.
Frassilongo belongs to one of the most fascinating linguistic islands in the Alps: the Mòcheni, a community of Bavarian origin that settled here in the Middle Ages, still speaks bersntolerisch, a Germanic dialect that represents a symbol of identity and cultural resistance. Attending the Sant'Udalrico Festival therefore means immersing yourself not only in a patronal feast but in the authentic atmosphere of a mountain territory that has managed to preserve its language, traditions, and landscapes between 700 and 1600 meters above sea level, amidst coniferous forests and alpine panoramas.
The 2026 Sant'Udalrico Festival was held on Saturday, July 4th in Frassilongo, in the Mòcheni Valley. The program followed tradition: opening at 5:00 PM at the fire station, Holy Mass at 6:30 PM in honor of the patron saint, entertainment and baby dance for children from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and a dance evening with live music from 9:00 PM. Throughout the day, a food and drink service was provided by the Pro Loco and volunteers.
Frassilongo can be reached by car from the Valsugana valley by going up the Mòcheni Valley; the most convenient train station is Pergine Valsugana, on the Trento-Venice line, from where you can continue by car or local transport.
Admission to the festival is free. Food and drink services managed by volunteers are available on-site. Layered clothing is recommended for the evening, given the altitude.
