Three days of festivities, music, and traditional cuisine in the village of Marter
The Santa Margherita Festival is one of the most cherished events in Marter, the largest village in the municipality of Roncegno Terme, located in the Valsugana valley within the Autonomous Province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). Each year in mid-July, the local community gathers to celebrate their patron saint, Saint Margaret, whose feast day is July 20th, in a convivial atmosphere that blends religious tradition, local customs, and joy.
What was once a one-day event has progressively expanded into a three-day celebration, running from Friday to Sunday. The event is organized with passion by volunteers from the Associazione Sagra Santa Margherita di Marter, who manage every detail, from the kitchen to hospitality, while involving other local associations.
The heart of the festival lies in the food stalls, which remain open throughout the event. The menu highlights the simple, genuine flavors of Trentino tradition: the famous "onti" sandwiches, french fries, local specialties, and the unmissable fried fish. There is also a Saturday Happy Hour with special prices on beer to accompany the summer evenings under the Valsugana stars.
The evenings are filled with music, ranging from ballroom dancing to disco nights, with orchestras and bands that get everyone, young and old, on the dance floor. Among the most anticipated moments is the traditional "lucky jar" game, a long-standing favorite, along with activities for children like the Baby Dance.
On Sunday, the festival embraces sports with events like the Euregio Sprint Champion and the Marter Run, a race that involves the whole village, alongside Holy Mass and a community lunch. It is the perfect opportunity to experience the authentic side of Marter, nestled between the Brenta River, the Valsugana cycle path, and the Lagorai mountains.
The Santa Margherita Festival is a genuine example of the folk traditions of eastern Trentino: a festival created by the community, for the community, where volunteering, gastronomy, and social life intertwine. For those visiting Valsugana in summer, it is an ideal occasion to discover the true soul of Roncegno Terme.
