The patronal feast of Pettineo, blending faith, tradition, and the spectacular 'A Vutata di l'Altari'
In Pettineo, a village of just over a thousand inhabitants nestled in the Nebrodi mountains in the province of Messina, the Sant'Oliva Festival kicks off the Sicilian patronal feast season in early May. Although the official date is set for June 10th, the community has chosen for centuries to celebrate its patron saint in the first days of May: the date commemorates May 2, 1663, when the local Capuchin friar, Father Benigno, brought a relic of the Saint to the village, gifted to him by the Archbishop of Messina, Monsignor Ruiz.
Pettineo's bond with Sant'Oliva is deep and ancient. The statue of the Saint, depicting her with an olive branch in her hand, was crafted in 1575 by Domenico Federico of Petralia Sottana, while the majestic processional float dates back to 1786 and is the work of sculptor Gaetano Ferrandino of Castelbuono. The festival bridges the religious and agricultural spheres: the blessing of the olive groves, from which the Saint symbolically takes her name, highlights the farming heritage of this corner of the Nebrodi.
Defined as the first major spring festival in the district, the Sant'Oliva Festival is now a defining event for Pettineo and the entire Nebrodi area of Messina. Eight days later, during the octave, the statue is carried in procession once more to officially close the festivities, sealing a ritual passed down through generations in this corner of Sicily.
The 2026 Sant'Oliva Festival was celebrated in Pettineo from Friday, May 2, to Monday, May 5, confirming the traditional calendar of the patron saint.
The celebrations followed the usual ritual, marked by the four moments that characterize the festival: on May 2, the relic procession and the blessing of the olive groves; on May 3, the Calata da Bannera with the crimson banner; on May 4, the solemn vespers preceded by the evocative 'A Vutata di l'Altari'; on May 5, the evening procession of the 1786 float through the historic center, with traditional ritual runs. In the afternoon, the historical equestrian parade took place with riders from the Nebrodi towns.
About a week later, during the octave, the statue is carried in procession to close the festivities.
Pettineo is located in the Nebrodi mountains, in the province of Messina. By car, take the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, exit at Santo Stefano di Camastra, and continue inland. The nearest train station is Tusa-Pettineo on the Tyrrhenian line.
The festivities take place in the first days of May (May 2-5), with the octave held about a week later.
Access to the celebrations and processions is free.
