About Sant'Oliva Pettineo

Every year in early May, Pettineo, a small village in the Nebrodi mountains near Messina, honors its patron saint, Sant'Oliva, with four days of ancient and evocative rituals. From the relic procession and the blessing of the olive groves to the historical equestrian parade and the breathtaking 'A Vutata di l'Altari'โ€”a unique electromechanical stage performanceโ€”the festival weaves together popular devotion and historical memory. The highlight is the evening procession of the heavy 18th-century processional float (vara) through the village streets.

A patronal feast that smells of spring

In Pettineo, a village of just over a thousand inhabitants nestled in the Nebrodi mountains in the province of Messina, the Sant'Oliva Festival kicks off the Sicilian patronal feast season in early May. Although the official date is set for June 10th, the community has chosen for centuries to celebrate its patron saint in the first days of May: the date commemorates May 2, 1663, when the local Capuchin friar, Father Benigno, brought a relic of the Saint to the village, gifted to him by the Archbishop of Messina, Monsignor Ruiz.

Origins and devotion

Pettineo's bond with Sant'Oliva is deep and ancient. The statue of the Saint, depicting her with an olive branch in her hand, was crafted in 1575 by Domenico Federico of Petralia Sottana, while the majestic processional float dates back to 1786 and is the work of sculptor Gaetano Ferrandino of Castelbuono. The festival bridges the religious and agricultural spheres: the blessing of the olive groves, from which the Saint symbolically takes her name, highlights the farming heritage of this corner of the Nebrodi.

Rituals that make the festival unique

  • The relic procession: opens the festivities on May 2nd, accompanied by the blessing of the olive groves.
  • The Calata da Bannera: a crimson banner bearing the Saint's image bows before the Crucifix in Piazza Duomo, symbolizing Oliva's vow.
  • The Historical Equestrian Parade: with roots dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, it gathers riders from neighboring towns and even distant centers like Capizzi; in Piazza Sant'Oliva, a dialect poet recites verses recounting the Saint's life.
  • 'A Vutata di l'Altari': the most anticipated moment, a scenic representation of the Saint's apotheosis, performed with a refined electromechanical mechanism where two angels descend from the apse to retrieve the statue amidst an illuminated staircase evoking paradise.
  • The procession of the vara: the solemn conclusion on May 5th, with the statue carried on shoulders atop the heavy 18th-century float through the main streets of the village, featuring traditional ritual runs.

A heritage of the Nebrodi

Defined as the first major spring festival in the district, the Sant'Oliva Festival is now a defining event for Pettineo and the entire Nebrodi area of Messina. Eight days later, during the octave, the statue is carried in procession once more to officially close the festivities, sealing a ritual passed down through generations in this corner of Sicily.

The 2026 edition of the Sant'Oliva Festival took place in Pettineo from May 2 to 5, featuring the traditional program of religious rites and popular traditions: the relic procession, the Calata da Bannera, the historical equestrian parade, the 'A Vutata di l'Altari' performance, and the solemn procession of the 18th-century float on May 5.

The 2026 Sant'Oliva Festival was celebrated in Pettineo from Friday, May 2, to Monday, May 5, confirming the traditional calendar of the patron saint.
