The patronal feast of Geraci Siculo, blending faith and tradition in the heart of the Madonie mountains
Every year on August 24th, the town of Geraci Siculo pays homage to its patron saint, Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, with one of the most heartfelt popular festivals in the Madonie region. Located in the heart of the Madonie Park in the province of Palermo (Sicily), this medieval village experiences the highlight of its summer during this patronal feast: the event marks the end of the summer season and the traditional return of emigrant residents, who come back to the village to reconnect with their roots.
The local devotion to Saint Bartholomew is ancient, dating back to the 12th century. Tradition suggests it was born from the close economic and cultural ties between the Lords of Geraci and the Church of Lipari, where the saint's remains were allegedly moved in 255 AD. For centuries, the bond between the community and its patron has shaped the life of the village, weaving together faith, historical memory, and a sense of belonging.
The festivities begin on August 23rd, the eve of the solemnity. In the morning, the clergy, accompanied by the statue of Saint James the Apostle (the town's protector), the Confraternity, the faithful, and the marching band, move from the Mother Church toward the peripheral Church of San Bartolo, where the patron's statue is already adorned. From there, the sacred images are brought back to the center, signaling the start of the celebrations.
The day of the feast opens with a solemn Eucharistic celebration attended by civil and military authorities. Throughout the day, the marching band entertains the population in the main square with symphonic marches and lively tunes. In the late afternoon, the solemn procession begins: the statues, carried on the shoulders of young devotees, parade through the streets of the historic center in traditional order—first Saint Bartholomew, then Saint James—accompanied by the confraternities, the committee, and a multitude of worshippers.
Visiting the Saint Bartholomew Festival means discovering a village suspended in time and a community that proudly guards its identity amidst medieval alleys, centuries-old faith, and local warmth.
