The August devotional festival in Pettineo, featuring pilgrimages and a statue procession

The Madonna della Pietà Festival is one of the most cherished religious events in Pettineo, a small municipality in the province of Messina nestled at the foot of Mount San Cuono, in the heart of the Halaesa Valley—a land of ancient olive groves on the edge of the Nebrodi Park. It is celebrated in August, when the village comes alive with the return of emigrants, and for one day, the entire community unites in devotion to the Virgin.
The heart of the devotion is the Church of the Madonna della Pietà, located on the outskirts of the village. From early afternoon until late at night, continuous pilgrimages take place here: residents of Pettineo, numerous emigrants who have returned for the occasion, and faithful from nearby towns climb to the sanctuary in an uninterrupted stream, demonstrating how deeply rooted this festival is in the life of the village.
The festival begins with the sound of the brass band marching through the village streets, announcing the festivities and setting the mood. In the late afternoon, an open-air evening mass is celebrated, animated by the parish choir—a moment that is both solemn and intimate. This is followed by the highlight of the day:
For a small municipality like Pettineo, the Madonna della Pietà Festival is more than just a religious rite: it is an opportunity for collective gathering and the reaffirmation of local identity. The presence of returning emigrants, the involvement of the organizing committee, and the participation of neighboring towns make this August day one of the most vibrant moments of the Nebrodi summer. The festival is free and open to everyone.
At the moment, the Municipality of Pettineo and the parish have not yet published the official program and dates for the 2026 edition of the Madonna della Pietà Festival. Based on tradition, the festival is expected to take place in the month of August, following the usual format: opening with a brass band through the village streets, continuous pilgrimages to the outlying church, an open-air evening mass with the parish choir, a long procession of the statue through the historic center, and final musical entertainment. Please check for definitive dates with the Municipality of Pettineo.
